TOOL-HOLDER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1919.
Application filed April 13, 1918. Serial No. 228,318.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Larson, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool holder and the object is to so construct this device that the tool or cutter proper may rest directly upon the holder and may, if desirable, be comparatively small, thereby making it possible to use up the small pieces of tool steel which may be available.
Another object is to so construct the holder that several different kinds of cutters may be used and in fact placed at the dif ferent angles very readily.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 1- is a partial plan view of the holder with the tool and clamp or vise removed;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the jaw or vise; and,
Fig. 6 is a view showing the method of holding different shaped tools at different angles in this holder.
1, indicates the shank of the tool, which is cut away at its forward end at 2, and is provided at the cut-away portion with a groove 3. Adjacent to the forward end is a slot a, extending downwardly from the upper surface of the holder having at the lower end thereof an opening 5, extending clear through the holder. Received within the groove 3, is a cutter 6.
A jaw or vise 7, is received within the slot 4, of the holder. The body portion of the vise or i aw is provided with an opening 8, which is of sufficient width to allow the cutter 6, to pass through while the upper end or head 9, of the vise 7, is adapted to extend laterally from the body portion and rest upon the cutterb. The lower end of the jaw or vise is provided with a threaded portion 10, which is adapted to pass through the opening 5, in the holder and receive on its lower end a nut 11, which when tightened,
serves to clamp the head of the vise down s me r an r set my be saaa in upon the tool proper, thereby holding the latter firmly in place.
As shown in Fig. 6, tools of different shapes may be readily held and adjusted within this holder. The tools 12 and 13 shown in dotted lines indicate the positions these tools might take.
It is obvious that I have constructed a tool holder which is very simple in construction and practical in use and one wherein the tool rests directly against the holder in order to give the proper leverage and one which is so constructed that the tool holder proper in its construction is not weakened in any way.
I claim 1. A tool holder comprising a shank hav ing a vertically arranged opening and a cooperating slot in the head thereof, said head being provided with a longitudinal groove directly above said slot, and a clamping means adapted to be received within said slot and adapted to engage a tool received within said longitudinal groove.
2. A tool holder comprising a shank, the head thereof having a cut away portion provided with a longitudinal groove and a vertically arranged slot and opening communicating with said groove, and a clamp, the
body portion of which is provided with an opening and of sufficient length to be re ceived within said slot, the head of said clamp adapted to engage a tool interposed between the head of the shank and the longitudinal groove.
I A. tool holder comprising a shank having a vertically arranged opening and a cooperating slot in the head thereof, said head being provided with a longitudinal groove directly above said slot, and a clamping means comprising a. T-shaped member, the body portion of which is adapted to be re ceived within said vertically arranged slot and provided with an opening at the upper end of said body portion, the lower end of said clamping member adapted to pass through the opening in the head of the shank and provided with a nut on the lower end, whereby a tool received within said openlng in the clamping member is firmly secured to said shank.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
