JOSEPH P. MANTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 72,654 dated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVED TOOL-HO DER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. MANTON, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode'Island, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Tools for Lathes, Planers, and similar machines; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder, without the wedge-clamp to hold the tool. I
Figure 2 is a side view of the holder and tool, the wedge-clamp to hold the tool being shown by dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal transverse section through the line A B of fig. 2.
Figures 4 and 5 represent the cutting-tool.
Figures 6 and 7 show the wedge-clamp for securing the tool.
. The invention herein described is an improvement upon the tool-holder described in the Letters Patent granted to Theodore Cooper, assignor to himself and Thomas Philips, on the third day of July, 1865, and also upon that described in the application for other Letters Patent, filed by me on the 5th day of October, 1867, and is intended to combinethe advantages which may exist separately in the devices referred to.
In the drawings, A represents a bar of metal, of suitable form and size to it the tool in which it is to be used as a holder, for the independent cutting-tool B. This bar, near one end, is furnishedwith a mortise,a, cut, as shown in the drawings, to accommodate the shape of the steel bar a, of which the cutting-tool is formed, and placed at any preferred angle with the axis of the shank A. As seen in figs. 1 and 3, the bar A is split from its front extremity through the mortise toward the rear for such part of its length as will enable the two parts 5 and b,- so resulting, to approach toward each other when strained by a clamp-nut. Connected with the mortise or holding-jaws a, and at the rear of the same, is a. transverse slot, 0, the face of which, next to the mortise which the tool occupies, is inclined, as shown in fig. 3. D (figs. 3 and 6) is a wedge-clamp, fitted to fill such slot, and furnished with a neck, 11, upon whose surface is a threadfor the nut z. The edge of the bar of steel forming the cutting-tool which, when the tool is in place, abuts against the wedge D, should be ground ofi, as shown at figs. 4 and 5, to afford a greater bearing-surface for the face of the wedge-clamp to act upon.
From the foregoing, it is clear that when the wedge-clamp D is strained by the nut e, its inclined face will not only press against the tool-bar I1, but also the two jaws d b of the bar A will be made to approach each other, and the tool will be securely griped.
I do not claim in this patent the wedge-clamp D, in combination with the holder and its cutting-tool; neither do I claim a tool-holder composed of two flexible jaw, ,in combination with a clamp-nut but What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I The combination, in a tool-holder, of the wedge-clamp D, with the fieizible jaws b 6' arranged to co-operate in griping an independent cutting-tool G, substantially as herein described.
JOS. P. -MANTON.
