PLANER-TOOL- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,081, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed June 21,1904. Serial No. 213,501.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W'. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oelwein, county of Fayette, and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Planer-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in planer-tools, and has for its object to provide a planer-tool having two cutters extending at opposite directions from one another, whereby two sides of a groove or two surfaces can be planed at one and the same time.
WVith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combi-' nation of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In orderthat those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my improved planer-tool; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the planer-tool; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the planer-tool.
A represents the shank of the tool, by which the same is attached to the planer-head.
B represents the body of the tool, in which the holders O for the cutters are pivoted, these holders being pivoted in the usual manner to allow the cutters to rise upon the return movement of the tool, these holders being pivoted at an angle, as shown in Fig. 1. The portion 1) of the body in which the holders O are pivoted is in itself pivoted at the point E to the body B of the tool, so that one cutter may be raised and the other lowered, as desired. In
order to hold the portion D in any position set, a bolt F passes through the body B and through a slot G, provided through the portion D, the slot being concentric with the pivotal point E. By threading a nut upon the bolt F the portion D may be held in any position set.
H H are the cutters, which extend through a base formed upon the holder C, said cutters being secured in position by the set-screws I. Thus when it is desired to plane both sides of a groove or two opposite surfaces the cutters are so adjusted through the holders as to make the desired out upon each side, and then the planer-tool may be used the same as a single cutter. It will thus be seen that in this way one-half of the time will be saved.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a planer-tool, a shank, a body portion formed with the shank, a block pivoted to the body portion near its upper end, a slot formed through the block concentric with the pivotal point, a bolt passing through the body portion and through the slot, a nut threaded upon the outer end of the bolt for securing the block in any position set, cutter-holders pivoted in the block in such a manner as to abut against the block when the tool is traveling in one direction adapted to move away from the block and rock upward upon their pivots when the tool is traveling in the opposite direction, bosses formed upon the lower end of the holders, adjustable cutters extending through the bosses and in opposite directions to one another, and set-screws for holding the cutters in position, as and for the purpose specified.
