CHARLES F. WINSLOW, OF PAI/VTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,176, dated October 23, 1900.
Application a'led June 25, 1900. Serial No. 21,566. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. WINsLow, a citizen of the United. States, residingat Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gages; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character having an adjustable face whereby the same may be employed upon curved or uneven edges.
To these en ds the invention consists in providing a slotted bar within which is slidably mounted a plate having a marking-pin secured thereto. This plate is provided with means whereby the same may be secured in adj usted position. A sleeve is slidably mounted upon the bar and is provided with means whereby the same may be locked in adjusted position. A stud projects from one surface of the sleeve, and pivoted thereto are the inner ends of two plates which form the face of Secured to each plate is a slotted;
the gage. segment which is slidably mounted'upon a set-screw engaging the sleeve. By this construction the sections of the face may be swung backward or forward together or alternately and locked in such position, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan .view thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is an end view. Fig. 5 is acentral longitudinal section. Fig. Gis a bottom plan view showing in dotted lines the portions of theface-plate in their various positions.
Referring to the figures of the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 is a gage-bar which is provided near one end with `a removable marking-pin 2. A longitudinally-extending slot 3 is formed within the bar, and this slot is countersunk at the lower edge thereof, as
'swing backward or forward thereon.
at 4, for the reception of a sliding plate 5. A marking-pin 6 is secured to this plate, and the sharpened end thereof projects from the lower face. A bolt 7 extends upward from the plate and through the slot and is engaged by a thumb-nut 8, whereby the plate may be clamped in adjusted position.
Slidably mounted upon the bar 1 is a sleeve 9ct' any desired form. Within this sleeve is mounted aset-screw 10,the inner end of which bears upon a plate 11, which is adapted to be clamped upon the bar and hold said sleeve in adjusted position thereon.
Projecting from the lower face of the sleeve is a stud 12, which is adapted to receive a setscrew 13, which passes through slots 14, which are formed within segments 15. These segments are secured to the outer ends of two plates 16, said plates having looped ears 17 at their inner ends, which are engaged by a bolt 18, secured to the lower face of the sleeve. This bolt serves as a pivot for the plates 16, and it is obvious that the same are free to By this construction it will be seen that by loosening the set-screw 13 the segments 15 may be slid Vback or forth upon the said set-screw, carry ing the plates 16 therewith, and by turning the set-screw inward .the segments and their plates may be securely clamped in adjusted position. It will be understood that this construction of face-plate is especially adapted for use where it is desired to describe a circle ywithin a circle or to describe a line which is parallel to a curved or uneven surface. The device is simple in construction and durable, and the face-plate may be set to any desired inclination, asis obvious. are utilized in the construction of the device, it will be understood that the same may be cheaply manufactured.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle or sacricing any ofthe advantages thereof, and-I therefore reserve to myself the right to f make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
As but few parts l Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l.v The combination with a slotted bar; of a plate slidably mounted therein and having a marking-pin secured thereto, means for locking the plate in'adjusted position, a sleeve upon the bar,a bolt thereon, faceplates hinged to the bolt, and means for locking said plates upon the bolt.
2. The combination with a slotted bar; of a plate slidably mounted therein, a markingpin secured to the plate, means for locking the plate in adjusted position, an adjustable sleeve upon the bar, a bolt projecting from the sleeve, face-plates hinged to the bolt,
slotted segments to the face-plates, and means for binding said segments in adjusted position.
3. The combination with a slotted bar; of a plate slidably mounted Within the slot, a marking-pin secured to the plate, means for locking the plate in adjusted position, an adjustable sleeve upon the'bar, a bolt secured to the sleeve, face-plates hinged to the bolt at opposite sides thereof, slotted segments secured to the face-plates, and a set-screw within said slots and engaging the sleeve, said screw adapted to lock the plates and segments in adjusted position.
4. The combination with a slotted bar hav ing a marking-pin therein; of a plate slidably mounted Within the slot, a marking-pin secured to the plate, means for locking the plate in adjusted position, an adjustable sleeve upon the bar, a bolt secured to the sleeve, face-plates hinged to the bolt at opposite sides thereof, slotted segments secured to the face-plates, and a set-screw Within said slots and engaging the sleeve, said serew adapted to lock the plates and segments in adjusted position.
5. The combination with a slotted bar having an adjustable marking-pin thereon; of a slidable sleeve upon the bar, hinged faceplates thereon, and means for locking the plates in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
