STABBING ATTACHMENT FOR PAPER-CUTTING MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,496, dated August 5, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AMBROSE O. STOUDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stabbing Attachments for Paper-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art, to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved stabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines; and it consists of a detachable and adj ustable stabber adapted to be secured to the clamp of the cutter. The particular construction and arrangement of the various parts of the same and the means employed for securing the same to the clamp I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the clamp of a paper-cutter provided with my invention, the cutter being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective of the stabber removed from the clamp, showing the under side of the same; Fig. 4, a detail in perspective showing one of the adjustable blocks carrying the stabbingmeedle; Fig. 5, a detail illustrating a modified form of the adjustable block.

Referring to said drawings, A represents the bed of a paper-cuttin g machine. Secured to said bed is a frame of ordinary construction, in which is mounted a paper-clamp O, provided with the usual operating-screw D. The rear side of said clamp is provided with a longitudinal flange 0, to which the stabber is attached, as hereinafter described.

recess 0 adjustable blocks H, having beveled ends which engage with the beveled sides of the recess, and are thus held therein. One of the beveled ends 72. of said blocks is detache able, and is provided with pins h, which enter holes ha in the main block, and are also provided with a spring h interposed between said detachable end and the main block, thus forming a spring end, which causes the beveled edges of the blocks to bind against the beveled sides of the recess and hold the blocks at the desired point of adjustment. To each of said blocks is secured a stabbing-needle G, similar in form to the central fixed needle. Instead of using the spring ends for the blocks, said blocks may be made solid, and arranged to fit accurately in the recess and be held as adjusted simply by frictional contact.

The stabber is attached to the clamp by placing the bar on the under side of said clamp at the desired point and screwing the set-screw down until it engages with the flange 011 said clamp, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The stabbing-needles, it Willbe seen, can be adjusted to or from the center of the bar. Immediately under the stabbing-needles a transverse slot or recess I may be formed in the bed to permit said needles to pass through and allow the clamp to engage the paper.

I have not shown or described the cutter used with the clamp, as it forms no part of my invention. Any desired form of cutter may be employed.

My improved stabber can be attached to the clamp of any of the well known forms of pa per-cutting machines, and when not needed can easily be removed therefrom. The ad justable needles will also be found to be of great advantage, as they can be adjusted to suit the size of the Work being done.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A stabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having stabbing needles attached to its under side and pro= vided with means for attaching it to the under side of the clamp of the cutter, substantiall as shown and described.

2. A stabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having adjustable IQO stabbing-needles attached to its under side and provided with means for attaching said bar to the under side of the clamp of the cutter, substantially as shown and described.

5 3. Astabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having a longitudinal recess on its under side, adjustable blocks mounted in said recess and carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, and

4. A stabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having a longi- I tudinal recess on its under side, adjustable blocks mounted in said recess and having spring ends and carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, and means for attaching the bar to the under side of the clamp of the o cutter, substantially as shown and described. 5. A stabbing attachmentfor paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having a longitudinal .recess on its under side, a central fixed stabbing-needleattached to said bar, 2 5 adjustable blocks mounted in the longitudinal recess on each side of said fiXedneedle and carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, and means for attaching the bar to the under side of the clamp of the cutter, sub.-

6. A stabbing attachment for paper-cutting machines, comprising a bar having a longitudinal recess on its under side, adjustable blocks mounted in said recess and carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, a

curved arm secured to said bar and extending up over the top of the same, and a setscrew-mounted in the end of said arm, sub. stantially as shown and described, whereby the bar may be attached to the clamp of the cutter.

7. A stabbing attachment for papercutting machines, comprising a bar having a longitudinal recess in its under side, adjustable blocks having spring ends and mounted in said recessand carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, a curved arm secured to said bar and extending up over the top of the same, and a set-screw mounted in the end of said arm, substantially as shown and described, whereby the bar may be attached to the clamp of the cutter by said set-screw.

S. The combination, with the clamp of a paper-cutting machine provided with a longitudinal flange on its rear side, of a bar having a longitudinal recess on its under side, adjustable blocks mounted in said recess and carrying stabbing-needles on their under sides, an upwardly-curved arm secured to the bar and extending up over the same, and a set-screw mounted in the end of said arm and adapted to engage the flange of the clamp to secure the bar to said clamp, substantially as shown and described.

-9. A stabbing attachment forpaper-cutting machines, comprising a bar,,blocks. secured tached to the under side of said blocks, and

means for attaching the bar to the underside of the clamp of. the cutter, substantially as shown and described.

10. A stabbing attachment for paper-cub ting machines, comprising-a banhaving stabbing-needles attached to its under side, an arm secured to said barand extending up over the top of the same, and-a set-screw mounted in said arm, substantially as shown anddescribed, whereby the bar may be attached-to the under side of the clamp of the cutter.

11. A stabbing attachment for paper-cut ting machines, comprising a bar,-adjustable stabbing-needles attached to its under side, an arm secured to said bar and extending up over the top of the same, and a set-screw mounted in said arm,substantiallyas shown and described, whereby the bar may beat: tached ,to the clamp of the cutter.
