Description

No. 790,760. PATENTED MAY 23, 1905. o. w. STUART.
HOE OR WEEDER.
APPLIOATION FILED MAR. 22, 1904.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES Patented May 23, 1905.
CHARLES W. STUART, OF NEWARK, NEW YORK.
HOE OR WEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,760, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed March 22, 1904. Serial No. 199.334.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. STUART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoes or Weeders, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to the construction of hoes or weeders, particularly to the sort of hoe known as a hand-hoe, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eiiicient tool of this kind, the principal feature of my invention consisting in the particular construction by which the hoe-blade is made reversible.
Reference being had to the drawings, which illustrate my hand-hoe in what I consider to be its most simple and desirable construction, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3, aplan view thereof, and Fig. 4 a sectional view through the blade on the line i i of Fig. 3.
A indicates the grip or handle, to which is secured in the usual manner the tang B of a holder B, extending at an angle to the tang andprovided on each side with sockets, (indicated at B B C is the blade of the hoe or weeder, formed with sharp cutting edges (indicated at O C) on both edges and having extending from its ends straps C U, which terminate in shanks or socket-pieces C 0 which are adapted to fit in the sockets B B of the holder B, the removable parts being held in position by a nut and bolt, (indicated at D D.)
It will be seen that my tool is of the simplest and mostinexpensive construction, thoroughly well adapted for the uses to which such tools are put, and has the particular ad vantage of having a reversible blade which can be turned to bring either cutting edge into operative position with little or no trouble.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hoe having a reversible double-edged blade C, with straps C C extending from each end thereof and terminating in shanks C C in combination with a holder B, having sockets B B in its opposite sides adapted to receive the shanks C, (1 of the blade, said holder B, having an angularly-extending handle-tang B, the reversible blade and straps being symmetrical so as to form with the holder a tool of substantially similar shape in either of its reversible attachments C.
