Description

(N0 Medel.)
B. H BBRKMAN KNIFE SHARPENER.
' No. 530,613. Patented Dec. 11,1894;
INVENTOR I WITNESSES:
A TTORNE W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD H. BERKMAN, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
KNlFE-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,613, dated December 11, 1894. Application filed March 1, 1894. Serial No 501.920- (No mbdel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD H. BERK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Long Island City, in the county of Queens, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening knives or similar instruments, and has for its object to provide means whereby a keen cutting edge maybe formed upon the blade of the knife without the aid of a grindstone or other machinery and by simple movement of the blade once or twice over the sharpener.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings. forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same upon the line m 0c, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section upon the line y-y, Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I construct a handleA of any desired shape or conformation and having an opening A at the center, substantially throughout its length. The lower end a of the handle tapers downward at each side to form a screw-driver b or other useful appendage and at the top of the handle is an aperture A by means of which the sharpener may be hung upon a nail or hook when not in use. The'lower end a of the handle has an internal vertical slot 0 in which are inserted knives d each consisting of an elongated plate or bar of metal, preferably steel. The knives are secured in place by a' screw 6- extending between the same toward the bottom and entering the rear side of the body, the front thereof being open. The said knives bear against each other at the top, where they taper gradually outward, and the points of the knives are beveled at f as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the device will be readily apparentfrom the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings.
v The sharpener is held at the handle by the operator in an upright position or at an incline toward him, the knife inserted between the knives d and drawn swiftly forward or toward the operator, the said knives d shaving or cutting a slight sliver from the edge.
of the blade at each side thereof, thereby sharpening the same.
A particular advantage of my invention is that unlike most devices of this character it sharpens both sidesof the blade at the one movement of the knife across the sharpener, and by the peculiar construction of the hanw die of my device it may be possible to combine with the sharpener a tool or implement of such general use as the screw-driver, such toolalso serving to prevent slipping of the sharpener when being used by alfording a point which bears upon the surface on which the sharpener is held by the one hand of the operator, while the knife is. drawn through the blades with the other hand as hereinbefore mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A knife sharpener consisting of a handle open at the center, and two knives mounted therein, extending into the said open center, the lower end of the said handle having a screw driver formed thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. A knife sharpener consisting of a handle open at the center and having a slot in its lower end, and two knives mounted therein and bearing against each other each knife consisting of an elongated plate of metal tapering outwardly and beveled rearward of its cutting face, the said knives being secured in the said handle by a screw passing between the same and into the said handle, substantially as shown and described. I
3. A knife sharpener consisting of a handle open at the center and having a vertical slot in its lower end,and two knives mounted in the saidslot and bearing against each other at the point, each knife consisting of an elonmy invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of Feb- 10 ruary, 189i.
BERNARD I-I. BERKMAN.
