ICE-SHAVER.
masses.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford,
State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Shavers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a device of the character described of im proved and inexpensive construction.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view with the holder cut away. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification, with the holder cut away. Fig. 4 is a front view thereof. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 3. 7
Referring to the drawings, a denotes the handle, 6 aholder formed of sheet metal bent to shape, the side guide arms 2, 2, being bent up at right angles'tothe seat 3, their rear edges bearing against the back a for support.
6 is a sheet metal blade fitted against the front of the seat 3; 7 is a retainer between which and the seat 3 the blade is clamped as by rivets or screws 8. That part of the blade projecting beyond the seat is corrugated, which, together with the beveling of the edge, produces a serrated cutting edge. In some cases it may be desirable to corrugate the seat 8, as indicated in the modificationv shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the blade being corrugated throughout its whole length to fit the corrugations in the seat, and the retainer 7 being also corrugated to fit onto the blade.
This device is used for shaving off ice from a block, the guide arms I) sliding on the face of the block and properly positioning the blade to scrape or chip oif small par ticles from the face of the block. The guide arms are necessary in order to insure the proper action of the blade without the attention of the operator, and are subjected to more or less strain as the sliding blows are struck. The use of sheet metal permits of using a material of lightweight or gage which will not be broken by the blows on the ice cake, and by being properly supported as provided for in the manner shown there is no liability, of their being bent out of position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2 1'. 193.5.
Patented Oct. 5, 1915.
Serial No. 10,167.
The construction is exceedingly light, strong and cheap to manufacture; the blade has a continuous serrated cutting edge, and is thus best adapted for the work in hand. It is securely held in position by the retainer, and can be removed for grinding or to be replaced by a new blade.
I claim as my invention 1. In an article of the character described, ahandle, a holder formed integrally of sheet metal andcomprising a back'secured to the handle, a seat arranged at an angle thereto, side guide arms bent up at right angles to the seat and projecting therebeyond at their front ends, and bearing against the back at their rear ends, a sheet metal blade secured to the front of said seat and provided with a continuous serrated cutting edge.
2. In a device of the character described, a handle, a sheet metal blade holder comprising a back secured to the handle, a seat bent at an angle to the back, and integral side guide arms bent up at an angle to the seat and with their rear edges abutting against the face of said back, and a blade removably secured to said seat.
3. In a device of the character described a handle, a sheet metal blade holder comprising a back secured to the handle, a seat bent at an angle to the back, and integral side guide arms bent up at an angle to the seat and with their rear edges abutting against the face of said back, and a sheet metal blade provided With a serrated cut ting edge, removably secured to said seat.
4:. In a device of the character described, a handle, a sheet metal blade holder comprising a back secured to the handle, a seat bent at an angle to the back and longitudinally corrugated, side guide arms bent up at an angle to the seat and with their rear edges abutting against the face of said back, a corrugated sheet metal blade having its rear end fitted to the corrugations of said seat, and a corrugated retainer fitted to the corrugations of the rear end of said blade, and means for binding said blade between said retainer and said seat.
