Description

waited gisten @anni @biblica HERMANN WENDT, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T() H. SEY- MOUR & COMPANY, 0F NEW YORK CITY.
Letters Patent No. 98,826, dated January 11, 1870.
luf-MPROVBMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.
The Schedulerefened to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, HERMANN WNDT, of Elizabeth, in the ,county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Pruning- Shears, of which the following is a specioation.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to pruning-shears, and conslsts 1n a novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the shears are greatly improved i'n efficiency,
are constructed of the shape shown in the drawings;`
with a ring, C, on the lower one, for Vthe purpose of enabling the hand to obtain a better purchase when f operating them.
rlhe cutting-edges the blades are made of a curved form, in order to obtain a shear or d1a\v,-cut upon the article placed between them, and the form of the curves is such that the object .is retained between the edges, and prevented from receding before them, as pressure is applied to the handles.
In the inner sides'of the blades, two circular recesses, D E, are formed, in which the two' studs, c d, are securefharound which the ling e, which forms the spring, is placed. Y
This spring, ,which is formed of rubber, or other material possessing VVthe requisite elasticity, while it acts to throw the blades open, also tends to keep the cutting-edges in contact, the stud d being made of a conical form, so that the pressure of the spring is applied in an inclined direction, and mainly upon the end of the stud, hy whichA the edge of the blade B, to to which the stud is ecurcd, is thrown against the blade A.
vThe arrangement of the studs and spring 4within the recesses is clearly shown in the sectional View,
gIn tools of similar construction, the faces of the bladesare provided with shoulders or stops, to retain the cutting-edges at the proper distance apart, and prevent them from being thrown open too :far by the action of the spring; but in this instrument the stud c, in the `recess D, is so placed `that it forms a stop, against which the stud d, on the other blade, strikes when -the blades are thrown open, so that the inner faces of the blades may be formed with a Hush surface, and the shoulders or stop upon them entirely dispensed with.
The ends of the handles are provided with a catch to keep the shears closed when not in use.
Claims.
I claim, as my invention- 1. In combination, with the blades A lB and fulcrum-pin a, the circular recesses D E, provided with studs c d, to receive and retain the spring e, to opcrate the jaws, substantially as described and specilied.
2. In combination with the blades A B, the'tingerbow C, by which the operation of the shears is more easily and etlciently performed, substantially` as described and specified.
3. Constructing the blades A B, with their inner or cutting-faces tiush, and without any set-01T, in
combination with the recesses and spring foropeuing the jaws. l
4;. So arranging'the spring e within the recesses D E that the cutting-edges of the bladesshall always be kept in contact, substantially as described and t specified.
HERMANN WENDT.
