IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, DANIEL CAMPBELL, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union, and Stateof New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pruning-Shears; .and I do hereby declare that the following isn full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of refcreneeindicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pruning-shears, whereby the latter, when required, are rendered available as fruit-pickers; the construction of the implement being such that the picking-attachment will notinteri'erc in thc least with the pruning or cutting-mechanism.
In the accompanying sheet of drawingse A represents the handle ot' the device, which is of wood, and of any desirable length, and B is a stationary blade, formed with a tang or Shank, C, which is4 screwed, bolted, or otherwise secured to the ,oute'r end of the handle A.
The blade B is of hook or curve-form, the concave edge being the face of the blade.
D is the movable blade ofthe shears, arranged to Operate' with a drawing cut, or to work on a fixed pin or fulcrum` The cutting-edge of the blade D is of convex form longitudinally, and corresponds in form inversely with the face-edge ofthe fixed blade B, (see iig. l.)
The blade D is provided witha curved shank, E, which is connected by a rod, F, with a crank, G, on one end of a small Shaft, H, the bearing, a., of which is attached to the handle A, said shaft having a cross-arm, I, secured to its opposite end,vby which the shaft II is turned.
J is a spiral spring, one end of which is attached to the handle A, and the other end to the crank G.
This spring has a tendency to keep the blade D open or cut from the xed blade B,.the, frmer being drawn. or moved toward B by turning the cross-arm I.
This arrangement or means for operating the movable jaw C is extremely simple and ecient, and admits of the implement being 4constructed at a small cost.
K represents what may be termed a holder, which is constructed ot' a piece of steel, at least thatwo'uld be the preferable material. i
This holder. has its Outer part, b, curved ,tmcorrespond to the concave or face of the fixed blade B, and said holder is pivotod to thc inner part oi' thc blade'B, as Shown at c.
The inner portion of the holder is nearly straight, as shown at cl, and the remaining part, a, is bent nearly at rightangles with (Z, as shown clearly in iig. 1. t
The inner portion of the finger is fitted between two pins, ff, attached to the shank E ofthe blade D.
By means of this connection, formed lbetween the holder and the Shank of the movable blade, the former is Operated from the latter, the outer part, b, of the holder being made to move out from the fixed blade B, a short time after D moves outward threrefrom, vand the part I1 of the holder being made to move toward B simultaneously with thc movement of D thereto. .Y
The holder K is constructed in such a manner that its outer part, b, will lap over the face of B, and come in contact with the same before the whole length of the cutting-edge of D has passed the face of B,Vand hence it will be seen that, in cutting a fruit-stem from a branch, the holder K will Yclamp the Stem and hold it firmly after being severed, the holder and fixed blade B Serving as a clamp for effecting this object.
Thus it will be seen that by avery simple attachment, I combine a pruning-shears with a fruit-picker, and Obtain an implement which will operate equally as well in either capacity as an implement made specially fot eitheof the above-named purposes. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The holder K, in combination withA the movable blade D, and fixed blade B, of a pair of pruning-shears, when said holder is applied or arranged so as to be operated automatically from the movable blade D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I further claim, operating the movablejaw D through the medium of the cross-arm I attached to the shaft; H, which is provided with the crank G, to which the spring Jand rod F are attached, all arranged substantially -as shown and described.
The above specieation of my nyention signed by me, this second day of July, 1868.
DANIEL CAMPBELL.
