UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
CASPER VAN HOOSEN, NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 39,983, dated J uno 17, 1873; application filed March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CASPER VAN HoosEN, of the city, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Scissors, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1, Sheet 1, represents m y improved combination scissors. Fig. 2, Sheet 1, is a detail view of the stilleto-blade of the scissors. Fig. 3, Sheet 1, is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line or m, Fig. 2.
The invention consists in arranging a cloth gage within a circular slot of one scissor blade, which is shouldered, and a stop-screw on the other slotted blade, which acts against the shoulder, as hereinafter more fully described.
A and B are the two blades, and O and D are the two handles of the scissors. Upon the inclined side of the wider blade A, is formed a scale of division-marks of inches and fractions of an inch. Upon the ends of the handles 0 D are formed two jaws E in such positions that when the handles are brought together they will close like the jaws of a pair of pliers or tweezers, and may be used in the same way. At the inner ends of the cutting-edges of the blades A B are formed slots or recesses which cause the said edges to terminate .in sharp corners or points, and which may be provided with an adjustable stop, F, which, when adjusted, will prevent the blades from closing beyond the required point, so that all the button-holes will be of exactly the same length. The stop F may be a setscre'w, passing through a nut attached to the one part of the scissors in such a position that its forward end may strike against a shoulder upon the other part, as shown in Fig. 1, so that a longer'or shorter cut may be made by turning the said screw out or in. G is a stop placed in the longer slot, and sliding upon the part in which said slot is formed, so that the edge of the cloth may strike against it and thus cause all the button-holes to begin at exactly the same distance from the edge of the cloth.
The stop G may be held in place by friction, or by any convenient device. The part of the scissors upon which the stop G slides may be provided with a scale of division-marks for con venience in adjusting said stop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The notated scissorblade A 13, having each a corresponding curved slot at the inner ends of its cutting edge, a shoulder, a stop, F, and an adjustable cloth-gage, G, as and for the purpose described.
