HENRY J. BARNES, OF EXETER, ILLINOIS.
PRUNINGESHERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,311, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed April 14,1899. Serial No. 712,965. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY J. BARNEs,a citizen of the United States, residing at EXeter,in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pruning-Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pruning-shears and one object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be used in cutting small twigs and limbs in a quick and thorough manner.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a pruning-shears which is formed in two sections, one of which carries a cuttingblade and the other a hook or holder to grasp the limb while it is being cut, and which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and cheapness, thus producing a thoroughly useful and practical device.
'Io attain the desired objects the invention consists of a pruning-shears embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device with the parts in the position they assume when not in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the parts in the position theyassume when in use. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line fr Qc of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view in detail.
In the drawings, A designates one member of the device, and B the other member. Secured on the member A, near the top thereof, is the strip C, carrying at its end the hook D. This said strip is provided with the lateral edges E for the other member to slide upon. Secured lower down upon the sides of the member A are the metal plates F, each of which is provided with the protruding edge Gand the curved wings or flaps II. The member B is adapted to have its lower portion fit upon the memberA and between the protruding edges and be surrounded by the curved Iiaps of the metal strips, and near the top of this member is secured the strip J,whose end is formed into a chisel or cutting edge or head K, detachably securedupon said strip, and upon the sides of the strip J are the grooved strips or edges L, in which are adapted to fit the overlapping edges E of the strip C011 the member A, and thus it will be seen that the grooved strips and the plates F hold the members together and allow the member B to be slid up or down, as the case may be, to cut limbs or to get ready to cut the same.
Secured upon one side of the member A is a handle N, and secured upon the memberB is a handle O, these handles being arranged at right angles to each other, so that the handle on the member A may be held in the left hand and the handle upon the member B in the right hand, thus allowing one to remain stationary while the other is slid up or down, as the case may be.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my device is readily understood; but, briefly stated, it' is as follows: The member B is pulled down so as to allow the cuttingblade to leave the hook free to grasp the twig or limb, and when the twig or limb is in the hook the member B is pushed upward, forcing the blade against the twig or limb, and as the hook securely holds the same the blade passes through and cuts the twig or limb.
It is evident that I provide a very simple, durable, and cheap, as well as very useful and practical, pruning-shears.
` I claim- A pruning-shears, consisting of one member provided with a strip having a hook upon one end and overlapping edges and two metal strips near the lower portion of the member having curved flaps or wings, and another member having a cutting-blade upon one end, and grooved strips secured to the base of said cutting edges; said last-mentioned member being adapted to be secured slidably upon the first member by means of the strip, grooved strips, and curved flaps or wings.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. BARNES.-
