Description

No. 68|,972. Patented Sept. 3, |901.
I. POSTLETHWAIT.
SCISSORS.
(Application med my 24, 1901.) (No Model.)
f UNITED STATES PATENT 'Ei-ica ISAAC POSTLETHVAIT, CF NEV MAYVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Soissons.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Itters Patent No. 681,972, dated September 3, 1901.
Application tiled May 24.-, 1901.
To @ZZ whom it may concern/ Be it known that I, ISAAC PosTLErHwAIT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Mayville, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in scissors, and relates more particularly to that class of scissors or shears of a large form, although my improvements may be attached to small scissors.
The present invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the material that is to be cut is first grasped by supplemental jaws that will retain the same iirmly and prevent the material from tearing.
A great difficulty heretofore has been experienced in the cutting of paper or other like material, as by cutting the same by scissors or shears it would tear slightly at the end of the cut. It is the object of my invention to overcome all such difficulties and provide a device that will be extremely simple,
strong, durable, comparativelyinexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its operation.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciicatiomand wherein like numerals of reference indicatecorresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a pair of scissors having my improved attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. et is a plan View of supplemental jaws, showing the sameattached to shears having both handles alike.
Serial No. 61,728. (No model.)
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates a pair of scissors or shears of the ordinary construction having pivotally connected thereto, as shown at 2, supplemental jaws 3, the blades of the supplemental jaws being formed with square engaging faces 4. The other end of the jaws carries coil-springs 5, which are secured at 6 to the handles of the scissors.
It will be noted that the supplemental jaws operate slightly in advance of the blades of the shears, thereby first clamping the material before the same is cut, the springs 5 serving to retain the material between the faces 4 of the supplemental jaws.
The shears, as shown in Fig. 4, may be easily reversed, and the device used to a great advantage in the cutting of flowers, vines, or the like, as will be noted. It will be noted that by this arrangement many advantages are obtained and the heretofore existing difficulties are successfully overcome.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination with scissors, of a pair of supplemental jaws secured to the scissors by the same pivot-pin securing the scissor-blades together, square engaging faces on each of the said jaws, the said jaws normally extending over the cutting edges of the scissor-blades and adapted to grasp the material and hold the same before the cutting-blades act thereon, and coil-springs secured to the rear end of each jaw and to the handles of the scissors, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC POSTLETHWAIT.
