SCISSOBS 0R SHEARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2?, 1915.
Application filed April 21, 1914. Serial No. 833,480.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN T. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Marshall and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors or Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissors or shears, designed more particularly for the purpose of cutting sheet metal, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a pair of shears which will cut a piece of sheet metal without requiring one of the severed pieces being supported above the shears at each cut or bite of the same.
Shears for cutting metal as at present constructed, can only be used by lifting or curling the left hand piece of metal as it is cut, and in many instances this kinks or buckles the metal and either entirely destroys it or renders it unfit for use until after it has been passed through flattening rollers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of shears in which the pivotal bolt or pin for the two blades is squared to pass through a rectangular opening in one of the blades, and rounded for pivoting the other blade thereto, thus providing a relatively stationary blade and a coacting pivoted blade, eliminating the tendency of the blades becoming separated to interfere with the cutting action of the same.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of shears made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the lower or stationary blade and 2 is the pivoted blade. Extending laterally from the heel of the blade 1 is an integral connecting bar 3, and extending upward from the bar 3 is an integral vertical member 4: which is curved at 5 and integrally connected to the shank 6 which is provided with a handle 7 at its end.
The blade 2 at its heel end is provided with a curved arm 8, which extends backwardly to form the shank 9 which is curved at 10 downwardly and deflected as at 11 to dispose the shank 12 immediately under the shank 6, and said shank 12 being provided with a handle 13. The pivot bolt 14: is squared at 15 to extend through a rectangular opening in the blade 1 and said bolt is rounded at 16 upon which the blade 2 is pivoted, and a nut 17 is fitted on the bolt 14L for holding the two blades in contact.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the stationary blade 1 will rest upon and hold the piece of metal at the left hand side of the shears and prevent it from curling up at each bite made by the shears, and since the handle members 7 and 13 are disposed in a parallel plane at the right of line of out, one part of the metal being cut will lie flat upon the table or surface which supports them.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
WVhat is claimed is:
A shears provided with a stationary blade having a transversely disposed bar extending from the heel end of said blade, a vertical member connected to said bar, a shank extending rearwardly from said vertical member and provided with a handle, and a pivoted member comprising a blade having an upwardly and downwardly curved shank deflected to lie in the same plane with the shank of the stationary blade and provided with a handle, said handles being disposed in a plane parallel to the cutting edges of the blade, and a pivot bolt for connecting said blades together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
