Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed. February 8, 1915. Seria1 No. 6,836.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAS IV. CLnMEN'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rexburg, in the county of Madison, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in a tool of the class commonly employed as a pincers, cutter, or as tongs.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a tool of this character wherein the handles are pivotally connected together, and the jaws are constructed independently of the handles, but are adapted to be removably attached thereto in such manner that when desired these jaws may be adjusted relative to the handles, or one pair of the jaws may be removed from the handles and another pair substituted therefor.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of an adjustable, interchangeable tool which will embody the desired features of simplicity, efficiency, strength and convenience, and which may be manufactured and marketed at a comparatively low cost.
lVith the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the tool and showing the aws in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the jaws in open position. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the tool. Fig. l is a perspective view of one of the jaws detached from the handle.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numerals 1l designate the handles of the tool, these handles being bent or bowed inwardly as at 22, and then widened and flattened to form the end portions 3, these widened or flattened end portions being pivotally connected together by means of the bolt 4, the ends of which are upset and countersunk as at 5, so that the two handles are pivotally united at their flattened end portions.
Each handle is provided with a gripping jaw 6, the shank 7 of which is flattened,
while the opposite or inwardly curved end of the jaw is provided with a beveled cutting edge 8. Each jaw is united with its handle portion through the medium of a screw 9, the threaded shank of which extends through the flat shank of the jaw and through the adjacent flat end portion of the handle, the construction being such that while each jaw is rigidly united to its handle, it may be readily removed therefrom by applying a screw driver to the head of the screw 9 and unscrewing the latter. Furthermore, the two jaws are united by a pivot bolt 10 which extends through the shanks of the jaws directly above the curved gripping sections thereof and below the adjacent terminals of the flat portions of the handles 1.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my improved tool will be readily apparent. It will be notedthat by this arrangement the strain on the jaws is removed from the pivot bolt, while at the same time a powerful gripping action may be obtained when the handles are brought toward each other to close the jaws upon an object. Furthermore, it will be evident that when desired the jaws may be quickly and readily detached from the handles and a new pair of jaws substituted therefor, it only being necessary to remove the bolts 9 as heretofore mentioned. I also preferably provide each handle with a second transverse bore or aperture 11, each of these apertures 11 being adapted to aline with a corresponding aperture 12 in the adjacent jaw, so that when desired the bolt 9 may be removed to vary the point of attachment of the jaw with the handle. In other words, I provide for a plurality of points of attachment of each jaw to each handle.
The numeral 13 indicates a lug on one edge of the flat end portion of each handle to maintain the aws in parallelism with the handles when closed.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a pair of pivotally connected handles, of a jaw for each handle, each jaw having a flattened shank portion, a bolt passing through the flattened portion of each shank and engaging with the adjacent handle, a pivotal connection between the two aws and a lug on each handle projecting laterally from the opposite i one of the opposite lateral edges of eaoh of said flattened portions and inwardly from the ends thereof, ajaW for each handle,
each jaw having a flattened shank portion,
Copies of this iatent may be obtained for five cen ts each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent;
a bolt passing through the flattened portion of each shank and engaging With the adja v SILAS W. CLEMENTS.
