Description

PATENTED AUG. 13, 1907.
H. w. sMoHL. BOLT CLIPPER. APPLIGATION FILED MAY 20, 1
HENRY W. SMOI-IL, OF VANDALIA, ILLINOIS.
BOLT-CLIPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application tiled May 20, 1907. Serial No. 374,746.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SMoHL, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Vandalia, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Bolt-Clippers, ol' which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to bolt clippers, and particularly contemplates the provision of a novel leverage system for imparting a maximum of cutting power at the jaws, and the object is to provide this, by a minimum pressure upon the handles. v
M y invention further resides in the iollowing features oi Construction, arrangement and operation as will be hereinafterl descr'rbed with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals are used to indicate like parts throughout the several figures, and in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved boltclipper in the closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view, certain parts being broken away, showing the same in the open position, Fig. 3 is a rear perspective oi one of the jaw levers, and, Fig. 4 is a iront perspective view of the other oi the jaw levers.
In the practical embodiment ot my invention I prol vide the handles I and 2, the handle 2 being provided with an adjustable set screw 3, adapted to bear against the handle l., to limit the inward movement of said handles to close the jaw. The handles l and 2 are provided at their upper ends with inwardly extending toothed segments 4 and 5, respectively, inter-meshing one with the other, and coupled together by means of pivotal links G. The handles l and 2 are further provided with angular slotted legs 7, extending outwardly and above said toothed segments 4 and 5. The jaw levers 8 and 9 are pivotally connected within said slotted legs 7, the upper jaw 9 being provided with a rounded head l0 and a cut out portion ll, at the upper end of which, and beneath the head l0, is arranged a socket 12 for the reception ot' the enlarged end I3 oi the angularly extending i leg I4 of the under jaw lever 8. When said enlarged head 13 of said lever is pivotally secured within the socket l 2, the leg 14 will t within the cut out portion ll.
The operation el my device is as follows: When the handles l and 2 are moved apart to the position shown in Fig. 2, the lower ends of the jaw levers 8 and 9 will be dra-wn inward by means of the legs 7 oi the handle levers under the movement et the toothed segments 4 and 5, and the jaws will be drawn apart at their pivotal connection formed by the head 13 and socket I2, suitably connected by a pin l5.
The jaws ot the levers 8 and 9 may be provided with removable jaw pieces 'lli and I7, respectively, having sharpened abutting edges for cutting the bolt.
By reierence to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing it will be seen that I provide the laterally extending jaw portions and the jaw pieces I6 and I7 with extensions I8 lfrom the sides thereof to provide for the cutting oi long bars or rods Having thus fully described my invention I claim:
In a bolt clipper, the combination of a pair of handle levers pivotally connected at theirI upper ends and provided with intermeshing toothed segments and slotted legs extending angular-1y outward from said segments, jaw levers pivotally connected at their 'lower ends within said slotted angular legs, one or' said jaw levers having a rounded upper end provided with a downwardly extendingremovable cutting jaw, and having a cut out portion terminating in a socket below said rounded end, thc other of said levers being provided with an angular leg having an enlargedjend pivotally secured within said socket, and having a removable cutting jaw extending upwardly below said first named jaw and adapted to engage therewith under actuation of said handle levers, said removable jaws being provided with portions extending to the sides of said levers, to provide for cutting long rods and bars, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I ailix in v signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. SMOHL.
Witnesses Il. T. IlUss, 'l'. C. MILLS.
