DENTAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed May 18, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELDON LEMOIN KNOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in dental instruments, and the object is to provide means for removing swollen portions of the gum where it extends over the tooth and prevents the tooth from coming through the gum.
The invention consists of certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cutting member; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the other member or jaw.
The instrument consists of two members connected together by a pivot pin 1, forming handles 2, 2 and jaws 3, 3. One of the jaws 3 is provided with an oval shaped blade 4, and the other jaw is provided with a seat or cushion of suitable size for the blade 4. This seat is preferably grooved as at 5 in which the blade will be received when the two jaws are brought together, they preventing the blade from becoming dull by coming in contact with other objects.
A cavity 6 is formed in the end of each jaw 3 in which the flesh or portion of gum removed by the instrument will enter.
When the instrument is to be used the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Serial No. 28,866.
blade 4 will fit over the tooth, and by drawing the handles 2 together the jaws 3 will be drawn together causing the gum to be drawn between the two jaws, and as the blade enters the groove 5 of the jaw, the gum will be cut away from the-tooth.
The blade 4 may be made of steel or other material and is applied to the end of the jaw 3, while the groove 5 can be formed in the other jaw 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a very simple instrument is provided for removing the gum from a tooth so that the tooth can come through, orassist the tooth in coming through the gum. This instrument does away with the lancing of the gum, which is objectionable because the gum will grow back over the tooth, and in many instances gives more trouble than would have been encountered if the gum had not been cut. With this instrument the gum covering the tooth is entirely removed, thereby leaving no obstruction to the tooth.
I claim A dental instrument, comprising two handles crossing each other, means pivotally connecting the handles together, cup-shaped jaws formed at the terminals of said handles, one of said jaws having a circular groove formed therein, and a circular blade connected to the other jaw, adapted to enter the circular groove of the other jaw in cutting the gum from a tooth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELDON LEMOIN KNOX.
