To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NATHAN H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Contour- Pliers, of which the following is a specification.

. This invention relates to dental instruments, and more particularly to that type of pliers employed in contouring gold crowns.

It consists, essentially, of the peculiar construction of the beaks of the pliers, whereby an operator is enabled to contour the crown with great ease and rapidity.

The object of the invention is to produce a device of the character mentioned which will be very eflicient in operation and which will be simple and durable in construction.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the pliers in a closed position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the beaks. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line X X of Fig. 1.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The numerals 1 and 2 designate the arms of the pliers, one of which is provided with a recess 3, through which the neck of the other one is passed, the two being pivoted together by a pin 5 in a manner well known in the art. The ends of the arms at one side are curved or bent so as to form suitable handles 6, while the opposite ends are shaped so as to form the beaks of the pliers. The face of one of the jaws 7 is flat throughout its entire length, while the face of the opposite jaw 8 is flat a portion of its length at 9 and rounded throughout the remainder of its length at 10. The extreme ends of the beaks are bent out ward and then inward, so as to form a short curve at 11.

The advantages of the peculiar construction of the beaks will be readily appreciated by all dentists having occasion to contour gold crowns, and particular attention is called to the short curve at the end of the beaks and to the fact that the beaks come close together all along the occluding surface.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A pair of dental contour-pliers comprising similar complemental members pivoted near one end and comprising suitable handles, and jaws, the latter gradually tapering throughout their length and pivoted at or near their extremities with a longitudinal mating crimp and projection, one of the jaws having a flat gripping-face and the other jaw having its inner face flat and the remainder transversely rounded the longitudinal gripping elements coming together when the jaws are closed.
