PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN BETTS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DENTISTS TOOL FOR CRIMPIN G EDGES OF METAL CROWNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,152, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed April 23,1903- f'o all whom it 722mg concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN BETTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentists Tools for Crimping Edges of Metal Crowns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in tools for dentists use; and the invention has for its principal objects to provide a novel construction of tool, made in the manner of forceps, which is to be used with a dental crown or cap, such as is applied upon the upper portion or crown of a tooth, for the purpose of readily crimping or closing against the neck of the tooth the open marginal edge portions of the metal crown or cap, and thereby producing a perfect and tight joint, as will be hereinafter more particularlyset forth.
In practice the metal crowns or caps are placed over the tooth which is to be capped and secured on such tooth with a cement, the lower marginal edge portions of the crown or cap then being crimped about the smaller neck portion of the tooth. These crowns or caps are approximately of the general shape and contour of that part of the tooth above its neck; but since the extreme upper portion of the tooth generally is of less width than that part of the tooth directly above the neck and the latter usually being much smaller in width than the other upper portions of the tooth the metal cap or crown is made tapering toward its lower marginal edge portion and when arranged upon the tooth, as herein shown, leaves an open space between the lower inner part of the cap or crown and the neck of the tooth, as will be clearly evident. So far as known no tool was heretofore made for readily grasping this marginal edge portion of the metal cap or crown and by means of which this edge portion could be crimped in one or two operations directly about the neck of the tooth and beneath the larger shoulder of the body of the tooth 10- Serial No. 153,927, (No model.)
cated directly above the said neck, and for that reason I have endeavored to provide a tool in the shape of forceps having clamping or crimping members which can easily be placed about any part of the tooth and the metal cap or crown thereon and can readily be manipulated in the mouth of the patient and without any discomfort to the patient.
With the various objects of my invention in view the same consists in the novel construction of dentists tool, to be hereinafter more fully set forth, for quickly securing and crimping a metal crown or cap upon a tooth.
My invention consists, furthermore, in such novel arrangements and combinations of the parts of the tool, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and then finally embodied in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the tool embodying the principles of this invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool, the jaws ofthe tool in both the said views being represented in their crimping positions when in the act of clamping or crimping the marginal edge of a crown or cap about the neck of a tooth. Fig. 3 is a face view of a tooth, illustrating the general shape and contour of the same and in transverse vertical section a metal crown or cap in position upon the tooth and before its open marginal edge is crimped or clamped fast about the tooth.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said hereinabovedescribed views to indicate corresponding parts.
In the said above-described drawings the reference character 1 indicates the complete tool, which consists, essentially, of a pair of handle portions 2 and 3, pivotally connected at 4 by means of a pin or rivet, substantially as illustrated. Each handle portion 2 and is provided with a forwardly and preferably downwardly extending member 5 and 6, respectively, the same being of any desired and suitable configuration. The said member, 5 is provided at its free end with a jaw or crimping-section 7, having a concaved surface or portion 8 of approximately a part of the curved surface of a tooth. In like manner the said member 6 is provided at its free end with a jaw or crimping member 9, having a concaved surface or portion 10 of approximately a part of the curved surface of a tooth. The curved surfaces or portions 8 and 10 of the jaws or crimping members 7 and 9 are located opposite each other, so that they can be placed on opposite surfaces of the tooth, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and'caused to exert pressure on the 0pposite sides of the tooth when the handle portions 2 and 3 are grasped in the hand and when pressure is applied by the operator upon said handle portions, as will be clearly understood.
The manner of using the tool for attaching the metal crown or cap to a tooth is as follows: In Fig. 3 I have represented a tooth 11, the upper part of which is indicated by the reference-numeral 12, the tooth, as is represented in said Fig. 3, having the downwardly and outwardly tapering surface 13, forming just above the reduced part 14, commonly termed the neck of the tooth, an annular enlargement or shoulder 15. The metal crown or cap 16 is made, as will be seen from an inspection of said Fig. 3, of the general contour of the upper portion 12 of the tooth 11 and has its surrounding portion 17 made to taper outwardly, as shown. This is for the purpose of readily fitting the cap or crown 16 with the usual retaining-cement easily upon the tooth. When arranged in this manner over the body portion 12 of the tooth, the lower marginal edge 18 projects below the surrounding shoulder or enlargement 15 of the tooth, and thereby leaves an unsightly and objectionable edge surrounding and projecting away from the neck 14 of the tooth, as illustrated. By placing the oppositely-located and concaved surfaces or portions 8 and 10 ofthe jaws or crimping members 7 and 0 of the tool 1 against the opposite surfaces of the outwardly-projecting edge 18 of the metal crown or cap 16 the said edge can easily and quickly be fitted and crimped about the neck 14 of the tooth and directly beneath the annular projection or shoulder 15 of the tooth, the tool being easily manipulated without discomfort to both the patient and operator, and a neat and perfectly-tight fit is made without detriment to the tooth.
From the above description it willbe clearly evident that I have provided a simple and inexpensive tool which can easily be manipulated and which can be worked in the mouth of the patient on all sides of the tooth to secure the results desired.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the details of the construction of the tool without departing from the scope of my invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements of the various parts and the details of the construction of the tool as described in the foregoing specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A dentists tool for crimping the marginal edges of metal caps or crowns about the necks of teeth, comprising, a pair of pivoted handle portions, a forwardly-extending member connected with each handle portion, a crimping-section at the free end of each forwardlyextending member, and a concaved surface in each crimping-section, said concaved surfaces being located opposite each other, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of April, 1903.
EDWIN BETTS.
