DENTAL CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application filed April 5, 1905. Serial No. 253,964.
To all whom it concern.-
Be it'known that I, EDsON Lnwrs Huron- INSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dental Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dental clamps, and particularly to such clamps as are known as cervix and labial clamps, and has for its object to provide a clamp of this character which shall be simple, inexpensive, easily and quickly applied, and efficient in operation.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a clamp embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail;
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the body a of the clamp is made of suitable sheet metal bent U shape, as best shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the rear of the body a is bent inwardly at right angles and terminates in the concavely-shaped jaw b, as detailed in Fig. 4. The front of the body a is bifurcated, with its legs 0 c curved, preferably as shown, and their upper ends connected by a short round bar 01 and held at a fixed distance apart thereby. The front and rear of the body a is provided with the bends e and f, respectively, to receive the ends of the clampforceps. The lever g is mounted so as to be turned about the bar (I as a pivot and is also capable of sliding upon said bar between the ends of the curved legs a c. This lever g is provided with a concavely-shaped jaw h, detailed in Fig. 4, which projects inwardly at right angles to the lever when the lever is in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The clamp is applied with its lever g swung down by clamp-forceps introduced between 6 andf, thereby springing the upper ends 0, c and b of the body a of the clamp sufliciently apart for the purpose. The jaw h of the lever g now being under the rubber dam and gum, the lever g is thrown upward and back against the gum, thereby prying the clamp farther up on the root of the tooth and looking the clamp in position for operating on the cavity through the opening between the legs a c. It will be noted that in the operation of swinging the lever g upward about the pivot 61 the jaw h is fulcrumed on the root of the tooth, thereby raising the clamp, also that as the lever g is free to slide upon the bar d the jaw 7L adjusts itself to the root of the tooth in conjunction with the jaw I) on the opposite side. I do not confine myself either as to the shape of the lever g or to the shape of the legs a c, as shown, as they may be made of any convenient shape, and other minor changes in the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my in.- vention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dental clamp of thekind described, a U-shaped body portion having one leg bifurcated and the other terminating inaclamping-j aw, and a lever pivoted between the ends of the bifurcation and cooperating with said clamping-jaw.
2. In a dental clamp of the kind described, a lever pivoted to one end of the clamp and capable of sliding laterally upon said pivot.
3. A dental clamp comprising a body a, a jaw 6, legs 0 a connected by a bar d, and a lever 9 provided with a jaw h and capable of turning upon the bar (Z and of sliding upon same between the ends of the legs'c c.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDSON LEl/VIS HUTCI'IINSON.
