Description

J. B. BRADLEY. WIRE CUTTING AND TWISTING TONGS1 APPLlCATlON FILED DEC. 6, 1919.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
WITNESS:
lei Z d m B Mg ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. BRADLEY, OF MIAMI, FLORIDA.
WIRE CUTTING AND TVTISTING TONGS.
Application filed December 6, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. BRnnLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State ofof wires.
An important object is the provision of a tool of this character, the jaw portions of which carry removable cutting aws or blades which are forced into position and held frictionally without the use of securing members.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, which will be very efiicient as combining n a single device the functions of three ordinary tools, which will be a labor saver, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, showing the jaws in partly open position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation,
Fig. 3 isa detail sectional view showing the removable dies or blades, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the blades.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the jaws of the tool which are formed in the same manner as jaws of many well known types of pliers and which terminate in relatively Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1920.
Serial No. 342,931.
long handles 11, the jaw members being crossed and pivotally connected, as shown at 12.
The inner faces of the jaws 10 are recessed straight across, as shown at 13, so that the jaws may be closed after being engaged upon a pair of wires. The jaws are further provided with openings 14 extending therethrough and which are wedge-shaped, as clearly shown. Engaged within each of the openings 14: is a removable die or blade 15 which is also wedge-shaped in one direction. The inner ends of these blades are reduced, as shown at 16, and their terminals are sharpened and preferably curved concavely, as shown at 17.
In the use of the device it will be seen that when a single or a plurality of wires is disposed between the inner ends of the blades 15 and the handles 11 brought together the wire or wires will be cut. The use of the device in twisting wires together is of course clearly obvious. When the dies or blades become worn or broken it will be apparent that they may be driven out and replaced, it being noted that the outer ends of the die members project somewhat beyond the outer sides of the jaws, as shown at 18. In order that the device may be used for hammering down the cut ends of wires, I provide an enlargement 19 formed on one jaw member in line with the pivot point.
- From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and yet eificient tool for the purpose specified which will be very efficient in use, which may be easily kept in proper condition and which will be a great labor saver.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
' A device of the character described comprising a pair of members pivoted in crossed relation and formed at one end as handles and at their other ends as jaws, said jaws 5 being provided with openings extending thereth'rough of wedge-shape, and removable blades associated with the jaws and wedge-shaped for conforming engagement with said openings the inner ends ofsaid blades being reduced and concaved and the 10 outer ends ofthe blades projecting beyond the jaws.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
JOSEPH B. BRADLEY.
