  • This invention relates to certain improvements in cutting tools of a type particularly adapted for use by electricians and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a flexible nonmetallic conduit cord or loom may be readily and conveniently severed and which can also be employed with equal facility in the cutting or severing of flexible cords of all descriptions having stranded wire conductors and also in connection with the so-called central office cable as used by telephone companies.

CUTTING TOOL.
Application filed July 13, 1921, Serial No. 484,348. Renewed June 21, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. MAYHnw, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVilliamstown, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cutting tools of a type particularly adapted for use by electricians and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a flexible nonmetallic conduit cord or loom may be readily and conveniently severed and which can also be employed with equal facility in the cutting or severing of flexible cords of all descriptions having stranded wire conductors and also in connection with the so-called central office cable as used by telephone companies.
another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein one of the jaws is provided with a cutting blade and the second jaw is of such shape to assure a shear action in a cutting operation and whereby the article to be cut or severed is prevented from being forced beyond the point of the blade, the shape of the second jaw being such to compress the article, such as a loom, so that the blade will begin tocut the article or loom at a sharp angle which will tend toward ease of operation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tool whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to decribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a cutting tool constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the blade as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 denote pivoted jaws provided, respectively, with the handles 3 and at. The jaw 1 has its central portion provided with an arcuate recess 5 of desired dimensions and the central portion of the wall defining this recess is provided with a pocket 6 B denotes a cutting blade of a length in excess of the major length of the recess 5. The central portion of the inner margin of the blade B is provided with a relatively wide tang or wing 7 which snugly engages within the pocket 6. The wing 7 is provided with an opening 8 adapted to register with the opening 9 through the aw 1 and through which openings is adapted to be disposed a pin 10, said pin locking the blade B in applied position but permitting ready and convenient removal of the blade when it is desired to replace the same or to sharpen the blade.
The inner marginal portion of the blade immediately adjacent the tang or wing 7 is provided with the arcuate wall or edge 11 adapted to snugly engage the extremities of the wall or edge of the recess 6. The arcuate portions 11 are continued by the straight portions 12 which contact with the inner edge of the wall.
The outer portion of the jaw 2 or more particularly the inner or working edge thereof is substantially straight, as indicated at a, while the inner portion of said edge or wall is disposed, as at b, on an inward curvature and the working faces or edges of said portions a and Z) are roughened or serrated to facilitate the cutting operation. The inner end of the portion 7) extends toward the point 0 of the blade and provides an effective means whereby the conduit cord,
loom or the like will be prevented from being forced beyond the point of the blade B during a cutting operation and also serves to sharply compress the loom or cord so that the blade will begin to cut the loom or cord at a sharp angle. This is of importance as it will be readily understood that this will tend toward ease of operation.
In order to further facilitate the desired cutting operation, the cutting edge of the blade B is arcuate with the outer end portion of the blade of less width than the inner portion. In fact, the outer end of the cutting edge of the blade B substantially merges with the adjacent end portion of the jaw 1.=
