DAVID H. RASSNER, OF PERU, INDIANA.
LINOLEUIVI CUTTER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID H. RASSNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linoleum Cutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hand operated cutters for sheet material and has reference more particularly to a device of this character which is intended primarily for cutting linoleum, the object being to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet a highly advantageous tool which may be effectively used in laying linoleum, regardless of the character of the numerous cuts which are necessarily made.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a linoleum cutter constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the front end of the cutter.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings above briefly described. 21- preferably straight metal shank having a suitable hand grip 2 at its rear end, while its front end is formed with a longitudinal slot 3 which opens at opposite sides of the shank and is closed at both ends. A suitable blade 4 is removably received in the slot 3 and contacts with the front wall of said slot, while the rear edge of said blade is engaged by a tubular blade holder which is threaded upon the shank 1. This blade holder preferably consists of a front section 5 which is merely slidable upon the shank 1, and a rear knurled section 5 which is threaded upon said shank. It will be seen that when the holder is tightened, the blade will be effectively held in operative relation with the shank 1, but when said holder is loosened, the blade may easily be removed for sharpening or to permit the substitution of a new blade.
The front edge of the blade 4: is preferably provided with a central notch 6 receiving the front end wall of the slot 3, which wall is shown of V-shape as indicated by the numeral 7. The rear edge of the blade l is formed with a central projection 8 received in the front end of the section 5 of the blade holder. By employing these de tails of construction, it will be seen that the blade is positively held against lateral shifting within the slot.
In the preferred form of construction, the front end of the blade 4 is formed with two cutting edges 9, both of which are at an obtuse angle to the axis of the shank 1, whereby effectivecutting may be performed by pushing the tool. In order that the cutting may also be accomplished by pulling the tool whenever necessary, the rear end of the blade t is provided wit-h a pair of hook-like cutting edges 10. During the operation of covering a floor with linoleum or the like, it is necessary at times to use one of the cutting edges 9 and at other times to employ the edge 10. Similarly, in order to complete a single cut, it is often necessary to use one of the cutting edges for a portion of this cut and the other edge to complete the same.
Excellent results have been obtained from the details herein disclosed and these details are therefore preferablv followed. I wish it understood however, that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a shank having a hand-grip at its rear end and a longitudinal slot in its front end, said slot being closed at both ends, a blade removably received in said slot and contacting with the front end thereof, the front edge of said blade being formed with a notch receiving the front end wall of theslot, and the rear edge of said blade being formed with a projection, and a tubular blade-holder threaded on said shank, the projection on said blade being received in the outer end of said holder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afixed my signature.
DAVID H. RASSNER.
