COMBINED SHEARS, BUTTON HOLE CUTTER, AND RIPPER. No. 404,169. Patented May 28, 1889.

MORGAN S. CLARK, OF TORONTO, KANSAS.
COMBINED SHEARS, BUTTON-HOLE CUTTER,AND RlPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,169, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed September 22,1888. Serial No. 286,061. (No model.)
T0 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN S. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toronto, in the county of oodson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ripper, Button-Hole Cutter, and Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined ripper, button-hole cutter, and shears.
The object is to produce a device which shall be of such construction that it may may be used as a ripper, button-hole cutter, and shears; furthermore, to produce a device which shall be simple of construction, efficient and durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a combined ripper, button-hole cutter, and shears, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved shears, showing the ripper closed or pushed back out of the way. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the ripper pushed out and ready for use. Fig. 3 is an edge view of a portion of the blade carrying the ripper. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the blade, showing the ripper removed; and Fig. 5 is adetail View of the ripper.
, device.
B designates the ripper, to be used when it is desired to rip a seam that has been sewed. This ripper, as will be observed, is provided with inclined edges or faces (5, which fit in a dovetailed recess, 7, in the blade 2, and is of such a width that when pushed in, as shown at Fig. 1,it will be level with the edge of the blade, and when pulled out will project a sufficient distance beyond the edge of the blade to allow it .to perform the function for which it is designed. This ripper may be held in place in any desired manner; but that shown in the drawings is preferred, which consists of a flat spring, 8, which bears against the under side of the ripper, thus holding it in the desired position.
In order to regulate the desired slze of the button-holes to be cut, a set-screw, 10, is placed in the handle of the blade 2, and rests against the shoulder 11 of the blatle 1 when the blades are brought together. Thus it will be seen that by simply turning the set-screw the length of the hole to be cut may be regulated at will.
The advantage of having the button-hole cutter on the handle of the shears instead of 011 the blade will be obvious, for two reasons:
The first one is that it will prevent the necessity of cutting a recess in the blades, which has to be done with the ordinary button-hole cutter; and, in the second place, a much more powerful leverage can be obtained by havin g them at the rear part of the shears and behind the pivot instead of in front of it.
It will thus be seen that, although this device is exceedingly simple of c0nstruct1on, 1t will be found highly efficient and durable in use, and may be constructed atbut a slight expense.
Having thus fully described my lnvcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with one of the blades of the shears, having at its rear end a cuttlngedge to be used in cutting button-holes, and a set-screw for regulating the size of the same, of a dovetailed recess formed on its outer side, designed for the reception of a ripper, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with one of the blades of a pair of shears, having at its rear end a cutting-edge formed for cutting button-holes, a set-screw engaging an opening in the sa d handle and designed to regulate the 8 of the holes to be out, adovetailed recess formed on the said blade, and a ripper provided with a cutting-edge and having its sides beveled to engage the said recessed opening, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the ripper mounted in a dovetailed recess formed in the up per edge of one of the blades, of a spring secured within iahc said recess and adapted to hold the ripper in any desired position, snb- IO stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aifixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
