, CUTTING PLIBRS.
No. 276,417. Patented Apr.24, 1888.

Wilnasum Inventor filler-nay ETERS PlwiwUlhagnphah Wilhillgton. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.TQHN' H. JENOKS, or WATERBURY, connnorrour,
CUTTING-PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,417, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed October 5, 1882. (No model.)
coincident-stoinsure their most perfect cutting action, and also so that the said cutters may be readily detached and replaced-as, for example, when dulled, defaced, or injured; and it comprises certain novel combinations of parts whereby this object is effectually secured, the cutting-edges being very firmly retained in position when in use, and capable of being readily started from their sockets by force properly applied.
Figure 1 is a side view of cutting-pliers fitted with side cutters constructed according to my said invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinaltransversesectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, on a larger scale, through one of the jaws and illustrating the manner in which the cutters are applied in place. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views, on a like scale, of the cutters. Fig. 6 is a detail view, on
I a like scale, showing one of the sockets which secure the cutters; and Fig. 7 is adetail view, on a like scale, taken in a plane at right angles to Fig. 6.
The opposite jaws A of the pliers are for nished at one side with sockets a, the socket in one jaw being opposite that in the other. The jaws themselyes may be of any, ordinary or suitable construction, and their extremities may be formed into nipping-jaws b, when desired. The jaws themselves may be operated by suitable handlesor othermeans, which, being well known in the construction of nippers, cutting-pliers, &c., need not be here described. Each ofthe sockets amay be somewhat broader at its front portion, 0', than at its back e. Furthermore, each of the said sockets has its inner end recessed in semi-dovetail form, as shown at g in Fig. 6, and its inner corners of rounded contour, as indicated at-t in Fig. 1.
Furthermore, each socket, taken from end to the rear or inner side of the socket not only tends to hold the corresponding end of the cutter against any tendency to spring laterally outward, but also by acting upon the correspondingly-inclined extremities of the cutters serves to guide the same into the required positions and retain the two cutters with their edges on the same plane with much less liability to displacement than if reliance were placed wholly upon the dovetail longitudinal section of thesocket. Furthermore, the rounded inner corners of the sockets are much less liable to chip off during the operations of inserting or removing the cutters, and, moreover, by lessening the frictional surfaces, permit the said removal orinsertion, as the case -may be, with a materially less application of force thanwould be the case if the corners were extended to sharp angles.
By inserting a suitable implement-as, for example, the blunt end of a cold-chisel-in the recess a and bearin g against the shoulder I), each cutter may be driven out of its socket to permit its replacement or its substitution by another. This removal is facilitated by the peculiar shape or conformation of the socket and its contained cutter, hereinbefore explained, which said conformation also insures to the cutter when in place veryfirm. retention in position and resistance to the thrust brought upon it in the operation of cutting wire or like articlesin the ordinary uses ofsuch implements.
'What Ifclaim as my invention is- 1. The combination of a cutter having dovetail ends and dovetail inner or rear end and rounded corners with ajaw, A, having a socket of corresponding form, all substantial] y as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In the outer surface of each cutter is an indentation, a, which pro-, vides a shoulder, b. The dovetail form of 2. The jaw of a. cutting-plier, constructed shouldered recess, a/{, in its outer surface, all with a, socket having dovetailed ends and resubstantially as and for the purpose herein set 10 cessed at its inner side, as described, in comforth.
bination with a cutter B of corresponding 5 shape, substantially'as and for the purpose r JOHN JENGKS' herein set forth. \Vitnesses:
3. A cutter, 13, having dovetail ends broad- JOHN W. WEBSTER,
est at its cutting-edge and constructed with a IRVING H. 00E.
