IMPROVEMENT IN GUARDS FOR SHEEP-SHEARS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,311, dated September 24, 1878 application filed July 19,1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRIEDERICH A. HEL- MEOKE, of Round Top, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Guard for Sheep-Shears, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved guard device for sheep-shears detached from the shears. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 a top view of a pair of sheepshears with guard applied thereto.

The object of this invention is to furnish for sheep-shears an improved attachment that serves both as a guide and guard for preventing the cutting of the sheep in shearing, and by which even unskilled workmen can use the shears and cut the wool close to the skin without hurting the sheep, either by the point or edge of the blades.

The invention consists of a guard attachment that is applied by a socket to the point and by a sct-screw to the rear end of one of the blades of sheep-shears, the guard being at such distance from the blade that the other blade can readily pass in between the guard and the first blade. The guard projects by its curved front edge beyond the edge of the connecting-blade, and prevents any pricking or cutting of the skin of the sheep by the shears.

Referring to the drawings, A A are the blades of a pair of sheep-shears, and B the guard attachment, that is attached to the under side of one of the blades by a socket, a,

at the point of the guard, and by a set-screw, I), that turns in a shoulder or seat, I), at the 0pposite end of the guard, so as to bind on the shoulder of the blade and secure the guard rigidly thereto.

The guard B is flat at the top and convex at the under side, the curved front edge projectin g beyond the cutting-edge of the blade. The guard is secured at such distance from the blade that the opposite blade may readily pass in between the first blade and guard and shear off the wool from the skin without hurting the sheep in the least.

The socket a hasvside recesses for the entrance of the point of the second blade of the shears, and serves to prevent any pricking of the skin in shearing, while the guard itself prevents the cutting of the skin by the edges of the blades, so that even an unskilled shearer may cut the wool close to the skin without any danger of injuring the animal.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A guard for sheep-shears made of a plate with a curved front edge, a socket at the point, and a clamping device at the rear end, substantially as set forth.

2. A guard for sheep-shears consisting of a plate having a flat upper side and a curved edge projecting beyond the edge of the blade, a socket at the point, and a screw at the rear end, as and for the purpose set forth.
