Description

(ModeL) D. M. YOUNG.
COMB ATTACHMENT FOR SHEARS.
No. 332,030. Patented De0. 8, 1885.
$3238: A INVENTOR: 0J7 BY MW ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. YOUNG, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMB ATTACHMENT FOR SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,030, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed August 4, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. YOUNG, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gomb Attachments for Scissors for Cutting Hair, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to attach a comb to a pair of scissors in such a manner as to facilitate the adjustment of the comb in relation to the scissors, and also to simplify the construction and reduce the cost of said scissors and comb.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of scissors provided with my improved comb attachment. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line a: m, Fig. 1.
The scissors A are of the usual construction, and in one blade two or more screwthreaded apertures, B, are provided, through which the screws 0 are passed, which have wings D, of any Well-known shape, on their upper ends, by means of which the screws can be turned, and thus moved in the direction of their length through the above -mentioned blade. The lower ends of the screws are swiveled, as shown at O, in the back of the comb, so that they may freely turn therein. In assembling the parts the screws may be first swiveled in the comb-back, passed through the threaded apertures in the scissors-blade, and then be supplied with the thumb-pieces, or the thumbpieces may be rigidly secured to or formed integral with the screws, and the screws passed down through the scissors-blade and swiveled in the countersunk apertures in the comb-back.
Serial No. 173,556. (Model.)
I prefer to provide the screw witha collar, 0 near its lower end, which collar is let in flush with the upper surface of the comb-back to allow the comb to be brought close to the scissors-blade, and the ends of the screws are riveted down to fit the countersunk apertures in the comb-back. By turning the screws the comb is thus adjusted a greater or less distance from the scissors, as may be desired.
on the head, and the hair projecting up between the teeth of the comb is cut by means of the scissors. It is evident that the hair is cut at a length from the head equal to the distance from the comb to the scissors-blades, and that by adjusting the comb at different distances the hair can be cut at different lengths. The comb also serves as a guard to prevent cutting into the scalp, especially when the hair is to be cut veryshort.
I am aware that combs have been combined adj ustably with scissors and razors, but most of these devices were more or less complicated, and for that reason not well adapted for general use.
My device is very simple, cannot get out of order, works perfectly, can be adjusted very readily, and is very cheap, as any pair of scistion.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the scissors blade having screw-threaded apertures near its opposite ends, of the thumb-screws 0, passed through said apertures, and the comb E, having apertures in its back, in which apertures the lower ends of the screws are swiveled, as shown at O, substantially as set forth.
DAN. M. YOUNG. Witnesses:
J. L. MOAULIFFE, EDGAR TATE.
In using the scissors the comb E is placedsors and any comb can be used in its construc-
