ARTHUR TILDEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BUTCHERS SAW.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR TILDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Butchers Saws, of which the following is a specification,
The invention relates generally to an improvement in butchers saws and particularly to a construction of one of the saw engaging terminals of the handle frame to permit the convenient connection of the saw thereto to guard against its accidental separation while in use.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a saw connecting means carried by the terminal of the handle and so constructed that one end of the saw blade may be readily connected thereto and when operatively connected with the opposing end of the handle is locked against accidental separation The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the portion of the frame showing the same formed to provide my improvement. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with a portion of the blade in position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings the improved connection is designed particularly for that end of the handle which receives that end of the saw blade opposite the adjusting connection of the blade to the handle.
In carrying out the invention, assuming the frame 1 in its normal position I form in that terminal of the frame 1 designed for this direct connection a vertically extending slot 2 opening through the lower and both side edges of the frame end and projecting in the plane of the saw blade when in connected position in the handle. The slot 2 which is approximately equal in width to the thickness of the saw blade is positioned to one side of the center of the frame end providing spaced sections 3 and at of unequal thicknesses, The section 4 which will Specification of Letters Patent.

be hereinafter referred to as the outer section, and the section of least thickness, is cut away on a line extending from the inner lower edge of the frame end forwardly and upwardly whereby is exposed an approximately triangular portion of the surface of the inner section. In such exposed surface of the inner section 3 I secure a pin 5 which extends beyond the surface of the inner section a distance materially greater than the thickness of the slot 2, said pin preferably extending beyond the outer surface of said outer section. The saw blade 6 is provided with the usual opening 7 of a size to loosely engage the pin 5, and in connecting the blade to this terminal of the frame it will be understood that the blade is initially arranged in line with the frame terminal in which position the distance between the pin 5 and the proximate edge of the outer section 4: is such as to permit said blade end to be engaged with the pin or stud. The blade is then turned on the stud until in a position to be at approximately right angles to the frame when its opposite end is engaged with the blade adjusting means secured to the main end of the saw frame, and which adjusting means may be of any preferred or usual type. In turning the blade into its operative relation with the frame it will be obvious that the back of the blade will ride into the slot 2 between the sections 3 and 4, and the pin'or stud 5 is so disposed with relation to the lower edge of the frame terminal that the sections 3 and 4 will embrace the blade throughout its entire width except the tooth portion. The blade is thus effectively held against the possibility of separation from the stud and the respective sections 3 and 4: will positively brace the blade at a point somewhat remote from the stud but prevent buckling or lateral torsion to a considerable degree.
The invention provides a simple means for securing the blade end in place which is so constructed that when the blade is in operative position in the handle frame there is no possibility of its separation from the stud carried end of the handle. The invention may be readily applied to any type of saw frame in which the blades are removably connected at one end while designed for hack saws, it is obvious that this may be frame leg to expose the opposing Wall of 10 adapted for many other uses.
hat is claimed is A saw frame having the terminal of one depending leg thereof formed with a, longitudinally extending slot disposed in 2t plane occupied by the saw when in position in the frame, one wall of said slot being cut away on a line extending from the end of the the slot, and a pin projecting outwardly from said exposed Wall. V
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
