SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 623,685, dated April 25, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. NOONAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of lVIassachusetts,have invented new and useful Improvements in Hacksaw- Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marke thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a hacksaw-frame which while being inexpensive in construction will be firm and rigid and which may be readily adjusted to accommodate saws of different lengths.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the construction herein shown.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hacksaw-frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof the upper portion of the frame. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the portion of the frame shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional end view taken on line a: a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a side view showing the position occupied by the frame while it is being adjusted to change the distance between the saw-holding parts.

In the construction of my device the parts a and I), together with the handle and sawholding parts, may be of the common wellknown form of construction, except that the top bar is severed and a U -shaped piece formed of sheet metal and struck up to the desired shape is riveted to the part Z), the opening in the U shaped piece being of a size and shape to receive the straight portion of the part a and allowthe same to slide therein.
The open edge of the part cis provided with a series of recesses Z, and the end portion of the part a is provided with a pin 6, projecting sufficiently and of a size to rest within Serial No. 618,192. (No model.)

I prefer that the part c be made of a size so that the part a will just fit therejecting part m, through which a pin d is inserted, and when it is desired to change the length of the frame to accommodate saws of differing length it simply becomes necessary to tilt the parts asshown in Fig. 5, move the parts a and c with reference to each other the desired distance, and then tilt the parts back to their normal position, and upon the saw being tightened in position in the usual manner it will be seen that the tendency will be to more firmly lock the movable parts, thus providing a frame having the desired simplicity, cheapness, rigidity, and strength, while at the same time it may be readily adj usted.
It will be observed that the cost of constructing a frame of this character is .Very much lessened by the employment of a U- shaped extension, within which the movable part a has a close sliding fit, and with the locking-recesses formed in the open edges of the U-shaped extension the side walls of the U-shaped piece give to the extension great rigidity, which rigidity is not weakened or lessened to a material extent by the forming of the locking-recesses at the edge, while if these locking-recesses were formed in the top portion of the U -shaped piece the stiffness of this piece would be materially lessened and cost of manufacture greatly increased, and the ease of adjustment is facilitated by reason of the fact that the adjustable part a has a smooth lower edge running in contact with a smooth surface-to wit, the pin dso that it becomes unnecessary to lift a recessed portion from a locking-pin, andit simply becomes neoessary to tilt the adjustable part a sufficiently to carry the locking-pin 6 out of the locking-recesses and then slide the adjustable part to the desired position, when it is again tilted to its normal position, carrying the locking-pin into the desired recess.
Having therefore described my invention, what I- claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hacksaw-frame comprising a frame proper composed of a short partb and a long IOC in said extension adapted to receive with a close sliding fit the entering portion of the part a, said extension being open atits lower edge and having a pin m, and engagingmeans between the end portion of the part a, and the lower edge of the U-shaped part, substantially as shown.
