UNITED STATES FrfrENirl OFFICE.
TRACY L. PAINE, OFIIIILVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
HANDLE FOR DIAL-LOCK KNOBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,582, dated March 25,1884. Application filed July 26, 1983. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may col/warn.-
Be it known that I, TRACY L. PAINE, of Milwaukee, in the count-y of Milwaukee, and in the State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knobs or Handles for Combination-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is' a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention rela-tes particularly to safelocks; and it consists in a detachable handle for manipulating the knobs of the combination-dials, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of that portion of a safe-door that c0ntains the combination-dial with my device, attached to the knob thereof. Fig. 2 is a longi- 3 is a cross-section of the same onthe line a: a0 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation ofthe parts shown in Fig. 1.
Ais the dial-plate that carries` the numbers, and B is the knob. C is my detachable handle, the inner end of which terminates `in a clawshaped iange, C', and near this iiange the upper side of the handle is grooved, as shown at c c, Fig. 3, to take a sliding plate, D, one end D', and the other in a screw-bolt, d, which latter passes through the iiange C at its base to receive a set-nut, E. The danges C and D are` preferably serrated or corrugated on their concaved sides, that they may take hold the more readily when they are clamped over a knob.
It will be observed that my device may be attached to knobs of any size, and when in position securely clamped on the said knob by means of the set-nut E, already described.
est accuracy, thereby effecting a great saving of time and temper.
In safes newly constructed my handle may be cast solidly with the knob, as a part or eX- tension thereof; but the detachable form herein illustrated is preferred, so as to adapt it for use with the innumerable number of safes now constructed and in use all over the country.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A detachable handle for adjustment to safe dial-plate knobs, consisting of two parts, one sliding upon the other, and having claw-shaped anges curving outwardly and then inwardly, and provided with serrations or corrugations upon their concaved surfaces, to firmly grasp the knob between them, together with a screwbolt and set-nut, to rigidly fasten the flanges against the knob, substantially as setforth.
In Otestimony that I claim the 4foregoing' I have hereunto set my hand, on this 21st day of 7o May, 1883, in the presence o f two witnesses.
TRACY L. PAINE.
