. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM H. FOSTER, or JEEEERsoNvILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO cHARLEs JosErH, 0E sAME PLACE.
FILE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,645, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed May 18, 1883. (No model) .To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIA H. FosrER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jeffersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Clamp-Hands for Hold-' ing Files; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This my invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clamp-handles for holding files, consisting, first, in a handle the tine part of which constitutes one of the jaws, the end of which is turned down to an angle with thehandle, and has a flange on the end, the face of which is on a line with the handle, with a small rabbet on the inside edge and a flange on the outside to hold the file. This last-named j aw is provided with another, made similar in form without the tine, secured to the side by means of thumb-screws, and by means of which the jaws are closed upon the file. The object of thismy invention is to provide an improved handle for operating files that will be cheap, durable, and convenient in use, and that may be so adjusted as to suit any size of files, and may be attached to any required part of the file where the pressure is required without the use of the other hand to do more than give it the proper direction. I attain the above objects by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de- Fig.
2 is aperspective view, showing the flanges" and rabbet or groove on the under side.
. Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. 1
In the drawings, A represents the handle and tine of the device, which is made similar to those now in use, and B is the stationary jaw formed on the end, which is about the same thickness of the tine and stands at an angle therewith, having the anglecorner rounded and the lower end widened somewhat in the form of an inverted T, to give more bearing upon the file, and is further provided with a flange, H, on the outside of the lower edge, formed as shown in the drawings.
0 is the loose or adjustable jaw, which is made in form to match the jaw B,with corresponding rabbet, F, and flange H, and is secured to thejaw B by means of thumb-screws D and E.- The lower screw, E, is intended for the purpose of closing the jaws upon the file,
while the upper screw, D, is intended, by means of its leverage in connection with the screw-power, to secure the file more firmly between the jaws.
G G are recesses or notches in the flanges H, to take away weight and assist in clamping thefile more securely, which is done by inserting the file between them at the required point, andthen close up the screw E, which clamps the file, which is further tightened by screwing up the screw D, by means of which it is held firmly.
Having thus fully described my invention,
therefore, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in handles for clamping and holding files by meansof screw and leverage power combined, is
In clamp-handles for files, having tine A, with stationary jaw B, flange H, and rabbet F, as above described, combined with the movable jaw 0, having flange H, rabbet F,and setscrew E, which is used for the purpose of closing the jaws upon the file, and also to answer as a fulcrum when the jaws are forced up more firmly by the screw D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
