' UNITED STATI-isfl PATENT OFFICE. f
ALOIS VINKLER, OF ONEONTA, NEW YORK.
DEVICE FOR SETTING, FILING, AND JOINTING CIRCULAR SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,092, dated December 22. 1885.
Application filed July 31, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALoIs WINKLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oneonta, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Setting and Filing Circular Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description o f the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, showing a saw in position for being filed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, showing a saw in position for being set. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device as shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the linewx in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a top view showing the saw placed in the device in position for' being jointed.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to an improved device for iling, setting, and jointing circular saws, which shall be capable of being adjusted for the several purposes set forth, and in such a manner as to be adaptable to saws of different sizes.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A and B designate a pair of jaws hinged together at their lower ends, as shown, so as to constitute a vise. The inner jaw, A, is provided with laterally-extending guide-flanges O C, forming bearings for a vertically sliding block, D, which is provided with a set-screw, E, whereby it may be securely retained in any position to which it may be adjusted, and with a forwardly-extending screw-threaded spindle F, extending through a vertical slot, G, in the jaw B, and provided with a lever nut or handle, H, by means of which the jaw B may be tightened up against the jaw A. The upper Serial No. 173,163. (No model.)
end of the inner or rear jaw, A, is constructed with an anvil I, and it hasa hinged or pivoted rearwardly-extending slotted arm, J, provided with a downwardlyextending segmentallyslotted bracket, K, through which passes a bolt, M, having a thumb-nut, N, whereby the arm-J may be securely retained in any position to which it may be adj usted with relation to the base L of the jaw A,`which is equipped with suitable means whereby it may be connected with or secured to a suitable table, bench, or other support.
Connected adj ustably to the slotted arm J by means of a set-screw, O, is a sliding block, P, the upper end of which has a cup-shaped recess, Q, provided with a central upwardlyextending spindle, R, onwhich is fitted an inverted conical holder, S, adjustable by means of a set-screw, T. By means of this holder a circular saw may be centered and held or retained, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in such a position that its teeth may rest upon the anvil I, and at any desired angle to the latter, which will be determined by the position of the slotted arm J. When thus adjusted, the teeth of the saw may be set by blows from a hammer or other implement in the manner usually practiced.
For the purpose of jointing the saw I employ an arm, U, swiveled or mounted to rotate upon the spindle R, and having an adjustable lecarrying block, c, capable of being secured in any desired position by means of a set-screw, V. The operation of this device will be obvious. j
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device may be readily adjusted to iit saws of different sizes and for the several purposes to which it may be applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv A compound tool for setting and iling saws, comprising astationary-j aw piece, A, the front side of which is provided with laterally-extending guide-flanges and the rear portion with a rearwardly-extending projection, and
rool
suitable means for securing the same to a table or bench, the upper end of said jaw-piece be-` ing provided with a projection or anvil, a clamping-jaw piece pivotally secured to the lower part of said stationaryjaw piece and slotted near its upper end, a sliding block engaging with the guide-'flanges on the stationaryjaw piece and provided with a bolt projecting through the slot'in the clamping- Io jaw piece, and atightening-nut fitted thereon,
a slotted bracket pivotally secured to the upper rear portion of the stationary-jaw piece, and provided with a downwardly-extending slotted arm and suitable means for adjusta- 15 bly securing said arm to said rearward pro-
