To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Dn LOYD K. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Open-Face Riveting and Forcing Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved vise and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character wherein the working face of the vise will be open and unobstructed so that access may be easily had to the work held against the said face.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device of this character adapted to hold the work with the working face of the vise providing an anvil for a rivet to be connected to the work and wherein the jaws of the device will be so arranged that the said rivet may be easily pounded against for overturning the outer end thereof with the jaws of the vise tightly holding the work in position.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device so constructed that it may be employed for forcing rivets out of the work by merely reversing the work from its normal position within the vise and operat ing the device to clamp the work between the jaws thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a vise of this character having a rigid jaw and coacting clamping jaws cooperating therewith and wherein the said clamping jaws may be adjusted laterally with respect to the rigid jaw ment with the work held between the said clamping jaws and the rigid aw,- the clamping jaws being movable in this manner to increase or decrease the open and unob structed space opposite the working face or anvil provided by the rigid jaw.
The invention has as a still further object to provide a construction wherein the rigid aw will be ad ustable either toward or awayfrom the clamping aws to ac commodate different-thicknesses of work.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide an improved holder for the device adapted to support the vise with the anvil of the rigid jaw thereof presented laterally to receive the work and in another position with the said anvil presented up.- wardly so that the operator may, if desired,
pound down directly against the work held by the said anvil.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the pre ferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved vise particularly showing the arrangement of the coacting jaws thereof as well as the holder for the vise. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the manner in which the holder for the vise, which is shown in section, is adapted to support the device with the jaws thereof presented laterally, this view also showing in dotted lines the position of the vise shown in Fig. 1 with the jaws thereof presented upwardly, Fig. 3 is a front elevation particularly showing in dotted lines the manner in which the clamping jaws may be adjusted laterally with respect to the rigid jaw of the vise, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank form which the holder for the vise is formed.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a stock which, upon the upper side thereof, is provided with a longitudinally extending series of teeth 11 forming a rack. Detachably mounted upon the stock 10 and freely connected thereto is a rigid jaw 12 which extends upwardly from the said stock and, at its upper extremity is laterally enlarged to provide a working face or anvil l3.
Detachably connected to the outer extremity of the stock 10 is a transversely extending pivot rod or member 14 which is freely fitted through the said stock and is connected thereto by a set screw 15. The rod 14: is preferably circular in cross-section; and pivotally mounted upon opposite extremities thereof, are coacting clamping jaws 16, one of the said jaws being arranged upon each side of the outer extremity of the stock 10 and extending upwardly therefrom upon opposite sides of the rigid jaw 19. to cooperate with the working face 13 thereof. Preferably, the jaws 16, at their lower extremities are bored to freely receive the 1' pivot rod let and at their upper extremities are laterally enlarged to receive the work.
Extending transversely between the jaws 6, is a connecting bar 17 which arranged ,substantially midway of the ends of the sa-id jaws and is freely fitted within suitable 6O ing, the screw 19 being movable to shift a the rigid jaw 12 and adjustably connecting the clamping jaws with the rigid jaw is a clamping screw 19 which "is freely fitted through the connecting bar 17 at a point between the aws 16 and is screw threaded 33 into the jaw 12. Preferably, the bar 17 is,
as best seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thickened at a point substantially midway of its ends to receive the clamping screw and interposed between the said bar and the head of the screw are a plurality of washers 20 which are freely fitted around the said screw. In this connection, it will be noted that the clamping screw 19 is removably fitted in position and detachably connected to the head thereof is a. handle 21.
The rigid aw 12 is slidable longitudinally of the stock 10 either toward or away from the clamping jaws16 so that the said rigid jaw may thus be positioned relatively to the clamping jaws for receiving different thicknesses of work between the rigid jaw and the clamping jaws. Coiiperating with the stock 10 for holding the rigid jaw at adjustment, is a spring actuated catch member which includes a pawl or plate 22 mounted upon the forward side of the rigid jaw 12 adjacent to the lower extremity thereof and slidably connected to the said jaw by a screw or other suitable fastening device 23, it being observed that the screw 23 is removable so that should occasion demand, the catch member may be displaced.
Projecting outwardly from the upper extremity of the plate 22 is a pin or handle 21 to which is connected at one extremity, a spring 25 having the opposite extremity thereof attached to the screw 23. The spring 25 will normally act to urge the plate 22 downwardly toward the stock 10 to cooperate with the rack 11 thereof with the plate adapted to engage the teeth of the said rack for holding the rigid aw 12 at adjustment. 1
By properly manipulating the set screws 18 in a manner which will be well understood, the clamping jaws 16 may be adjusted laterally in opposite directions with respect to the rigid jaw 12 for receiving the work, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawthe jaws 16 toward thejaw 12 to clamp the work therebetween. Particular attention is now directed to the fact that the space between the upper extremities of the jaws 16 in front of the anvil 13 is unobstructed so extending downwardly therefrom.
that the face of the anvil 13 is open to permit free access to the work held against the said anvil and, of course, the open space between the jaws 16 may be varied by adjusting the jaws laterally with respect to the jaw 12. It will be seen that when the work is clamped between the several jaws of the device, the work may be operated upon directly against the anvil. Accordingly, for the purpose of riveting, a rivet may be placed through the work with the head thereof seated against the anvil when the rivet may be pounded upon for overturning the outer end thereof with the face of the anvil forming a firm abutment for the rivet. To displace a rivet, the work may be placed between the clamping jaws 16 and the rigid jaw 12 with the outer end of the rivet presented toward the anvil 13. Turning of the screw 19 to urge the work toward the anvil 13 will then act to force the rivet out of the work in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the work is relatively short, the aws 16 will be moved to a position relatively close together to engage therewith. However, when the work is longer, the jaws 16 may be moved a farther distance apart and accordingly, the said jaws may be adjusted to receive work of various lengths.
In connection with my improved vise, I employ a holder therefor which includes angularly disposed hollow socket members 26 and 27 respectively, each of these socket members being substantially rectangular in cross-section to removably receive the inner extremity of the stock 10. The holder is preferably formed from a blank as illustrated in Fig. 4- of the drawings. This blank is cut to provide a transversely extending attaching plate 28 upon opposite sides of which are formed suitable wings 29 each bent along a plurality of longitudinally extending fold lines to define one of the socket members referred to, the socket members 27 being bent downwardly to extend at substantially right angles to the attaching plate.
v The holder is preferably connected to a work bench in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings with the plate 28 secured to the said bench at one corner thereof to support the socket member 26 upon the top of the bench with the socket member 27 It will now be seen that when the inner extremity of the stock 10 is fitted within the socket member 26, the jaws of the vise will, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, be supported in an upright position with the anvil 13 presented laterally to receive the work. However, by fitting the inner extremity of the stock 10 into the socket member 27, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the
, rigid jaw 12 will then be supported in a position with the anvil thereof presented upwardly, so that if desired, the operator may then pound down upon the anvil directly against the work.
It will thus be seen that I provide a very simple and eflicient construction for the purpose set forth and a vise which is not only adapted to receive various lengths and thicknesses of work but also wherein access may be easily had to the work at its points of contact with the jaws of the vise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, and clamping jaws mounted to 005perate with the rigid jaw at opposite sides thereof with the clamping jaws adjustable laterally with respect to the rigid jaw.
2. A device of the character described in cluding a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, spaced clamping jaws mounted to cooperate with the rigid jaw at opposite sides thereof and means adjustably connecting said jaws.
3. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, and pivoted clamping jaws mounted to rock toward the rigid jaw to cooperate therewith and shiftable laterally with respect to the rigid aw.
4. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, and spaced clamping jaws mounted at opposite sides of the rigid jaw to cooperate therewith with the space between the working ends of the said clamping jaws and the rigid jaw unobstructed to a point inwardlya of the rigid jaw.
5. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, and adjustably connected clamping jaws swingingly mounted to coiiperate with the rigid jaw at opposite sides thereof.
6. A device of the character described in cluding a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, a pivot pin carried by the stock and coacting clamping jaws swingingly connected to said pin upon opposite sides of the stock and mounted to cooperate with the rigid jaw with the space between the working ends of the clamping jaws and the rigid jaw unobstructed.
7. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, spaced pivotally mounted clamping jaws arranged to cooperate with the rigid aw at opposite sides thereof, means adjustably connecting the said clamping jaws, and means engaging said first mentioned means for urging the clamping jaws to active position.
8. A device of the character described including a stock, clamping jaws carried thereby, and a rigid jaw adjustable upon the stock toward or away from the clamp ing jaws in a plane between the said jaws.
9. A device of the character described in cluding a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, a pivot pin carried by the stock, coacting clamping jaws swingingly mounted upon said pivot pin to cooperate with the rigid jaw at opposite sides thereof, a bar extending between said clamping jaws, means carried by the clamping jaws and engaging said bar to adjustably connect the clamping jaws, and means adjustable upon the rigid jaw and engaging said bar for urging the clamping jaws to active position.
10. The combination with a vise having a jaw providing an anvil and having other jaws arranged to coact with said first mentioned jaw at opposite sides of said anvil with the anvil exposed, of a holder for the vise adapted to support the vise in one position with the anvil of said first mentioned jaw presented laterally and in another position with the said anvil presented upwardly.
11. The combination with a vise having a jaw providing an anvil and having other jaws arranged to coact with said first mentioned jaw at opposite sides of said anvil with the anvil exposed, of a holder for the vise having a socket member adapted to sup port the vise with the anvil of said first mentioned jaw presented laterally and a second socket member adapted to support the vise with the said anvil presented upwardly.
12. A device of the character described including a stock, a rigid jaw carried thereby, pivoted clamping jaws slidably adjustable laterally with respect to the rigid jaw and arranged to coact therewith, and means for urging the clamping aws to active position.
