HENRY A. ANDERSON, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NELS BENSON, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINATION WRENCH AND VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted June 17, 1913 Application led November 17, 1911. Serial No. 660,759.
To all wiz-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY r1. ANnnnsoN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, county of Spokane, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Vrench and Vise, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and particularly to that type thereof known as monkey wrenches.
My invention further relates to a combination tool adapted for use as a wrench. or as a vise.
The object ot' my invention is to provide an improved wrench of the type mentioned in which the sliding jaw may be quickly adjusted to approximately the desired position and the other jaw afterward adjusted to securely clamp the work, as fully described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 711,966, tiled July 29, 1919.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrench characterized as above stated and equipped with means for attaching the same to a bench in order that the device may be used as a vise.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment for a wrench whereby a monkey wrench may be secured to a bench to serve as a vise.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Tit-h these objects in view my invention consists generally in a wrench comprising a shank, a sliding jaw mounted thereon, a ratchet connection between said shank and jaw whereby the latter may be quickly adjusted, and an outer jaw adjustably mounted on the end of the shank.
My invention further consists in a monkey wrench having a sliding jaw and in means for clamping said jaw to a bench whereby the device may be utilized as a. vise.
My invention further consists in a device or attachment for a monkey wrench whereby the same may be secured to a bench for use as a vise.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will. be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.`
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot' this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying` my invention in its preferred form and illustrated as equipped with the device for securing` the same to a bench, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device without the attachment, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the wrench, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 7e-.fr of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device for securing the wrench to a bench, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line y-y of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indi- Cates the shank otl the wrench which is provided at one end with a grip or handle 2 and 3 and 4 the jaws. The jaw 3 corresponds to the usual sliding jaw of a monkey wrench and is provided with the sleeve 5 to receive the shank 1. Formed in the jaw 3 is a recess or chamber 6 having an eXtension 7 extending longitudinally through the sleeve to receive and accommodate a dog 8 and an operating lever 9 respectively, both of which are entirely incased with the eX- ception of the projecting tail or thumb piece 10 of the lever. The dog 8 is formed with two angularly disposed arms 11 and 12, the latter of which is formed at the end with a tooth 13 to engage a ratchet 14 formed on the adjacent edge of the shank 1, and with a detent 15 under which the inner end of the lever 9 engages.
16 indicates a spring for maintaining the dog in operative position.
17 and 18 indicate the pivot pins for the dog and lever respectively.
To facilitate assembling the device one side 19 o1 the jaw member 3, is removable as indicated in Fig. 6 and is held in position by any suitable means such as a plurality of screws 20.
It is obvious that by depressing the end 10 of the lever 9 the dog will be raised out of engagement with the ratchet 14 and the jaw 3 may be adjusted to approximately the desired position.
It is a common fault with the usual ratchet wrenches of the monkey wrench type, that a proper adjustment of the jaws cannot always be obtained and the jaws tit the work too loosely. To obviate this objection I provide means whereby the outer jaw 4 may be adjusted to securely clamp the work after the jaw 3 is moved to approximate position. To this end, the jaw 4 is slidably mounted upon the end of the shank l, said jaw being recessed as at 21 to receive the same and a screw 22 is swiveled to the jaw and tapped into the end of the shank. The screw may be swiveled to the jaw in any suitable manner but to facilitate assembling the device I swivel the screw to a member 23 and secure said member to the jaw 4. rlhe member 23 comprises a bar letinto the outer face of the jaw 4 and having itsI upper end secured thereto as by a screw 24. The lower end of said. member Qr bar is bent under and let into the butt end of the jaw and then turned inwardly and let into the inner face thereof as at 26. By this construction the member to which. the screw is swiveled is securely held in position by the one screw 24 and being let int-o the jaw member does not present any projecting parts. The screw 22 is provided with a knurled head 27 which head is also provided with transverse openings 28 to receive a nail or small rod to facilitate turning the screw, the latter being used particularly when the device is employed as a vise as will appear hereinafter.
To secure the device to a bench in order .that the same may be employed as a vise having a knurled head 34. The screw 33 is in axial alin'ement with the plate 31.
In using the device the clamp 29 is arranged upon the jaw 3 with the members 30 upon opposite sides thereof and the plate 31 engaging the sleeve against the outer face of the jaw. The opposite or back edge of the sleeve 5 is rested upon the bench with the block 32 extending beneath the bench so that by tightening the screw the jaw member 3 is securely clamped in posit-ion. If preferred the plate 3l may be shaped as at 35 to fit the adjacent portion of the jaw, forming a shoulder to prevent the jaw 3 from being pushed inwardly as the jaw 4 is tightened.
ItI should be noted that the outer face of the jaw 4 is cut away as at 36 adjacent the head of the screw 22 to facilitate turning the same with the fingers.
The operation of the device is obvious from the description and no detailed description of the operation is necessary.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A wrench comprising a shank, a sliding jaw adjustably mounted thereon, means for clamping said sliding jaw to a bench, and a second jaw on said shank, said means comprising a pair of U-shaped members connected at one end by a plate and at the other end by a block and a screw threaded through said block in axial alinement with said plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
