SAW-FILING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,899, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed November 27, 1901` Serial No. 83,905. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LAMBROSE J. BECK,a citizen of the United States,'residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices; andIdo declare thefollowing to beafull, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rIhis invention relates-to improvements in saw-filing devices; and it consists of the'features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter .fully described, and particularly defined in the appended claim. Y
The object of thevinvention is to provide simple and effective means for clamping the saw and adjusting the file to a variety of positions.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a saw-filing device embodying my invention. Fig; 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation with parts in section. Fig. 4 is a section through the adjustable file-supporting bracket. Fig. 5 is a plan view of theyoke. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the le-setting scale.
Referring .now more particularly to theY drawings, the numeral 1 represents a U- shaped saw-clamp, one of the arms of which carries a fixed jaw 2 and the other arm a movable jaw 3, which is adjusted to clamp the saw against said'iXed jaw.
4 is a clampw ofy ordinary` construction for attaching the device to a table or work-bench, and 5 the ile mounted in the le-holder 6. The file-holder 6 comprises a guide-rod 7 the Iile-supporting arms 8 and 9, the socket 10, and the handle 11. The arm 8 is fixed to the rod, while the arm 9 is adjustably secured to the rod and socket by set-screws 12 and 13. The ends of the file are seated in the arm 8 and socket 10, and the latter is providedwith works an eccentric 18,' formed upon a pivotpin19,journaled inthe frame 1 and carried bya-lever 20. .When thislever is thrown'inV one direction, theV cam bears against the arm 15 and forces the'jaw 3 toward the fixed jaw 2. When the lever is thrown in the opposite direction, the reverse action takes place, and the movable arm and jaw are moved away from the fixed jaw. By this construction provision is made for quickly and conveniently clamping and releasing the saw.
The jaw 2 is formed in its outer face with a groove or guideway in which is fitted a tongued slide 21, carrying a bracket 22, which serves as a support for the iile-holden- The said bracket 22 is formed with a bearing 23 to receive a trunnion 24, having an'annular series of seats 25 to receive a set-screw 26, mounted on said bearing, whereby the trunnion may be held in any desired adjusted position. The trunnion forms part of a yokecarrier and is held in Vposition against longitudinal movementin one direction by a ixedA Ilange 27 and againstlongitudinal movement in the other direction by a washer 28, secured thereto by a screw 29. From the flange 27 the yoke-carrier is bifurcated to form upper and lowerparallel ears 30 31,` forming a guide between them to receive a-yoke 32, through which reciprocates the guide-rod 7 of the fileholder 6. This yoke is pivoted between the ears on the pivot-pin or screw1 32 to swing in a' horizontal plane and is formed with an arcshaped slot 33 for passage of a clamping-screw 34, whose threaded shank works in a threaded opening in theear y31 and whose head bears against the ear 30, whereby said yoke may be held clamped in adjusted position. It will thus be seen that the file-holder may be adjusted horizontally by swinging the yoke 32 in one direction or the other and may be adjusted vertically by loosening up the set-screw 26 and allowing the yoke to turn with the trunnion 24, this construction providing a universal-joint connection :between the filei holder and the slide 2l to permit the fileto be adjusted to regulate the angle and depth of the file-cuts. i
In operation it will be understood that the saw is clamped between the jaws of the clamping device 1 and the file-holder adjusted and reciprocated to cut away and file the saw-teeth, as desired. The mode of adjusting the holder willbe readily understood from the foregoing description.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a scale which I 'have devised to enable the file to be set to correspond to the pitch of the saw-teeth. This scale comprises a plate 35, having notches 36 to receive an edge of the file, said notches corresponding to the different pitch-angles of the teeth of saws of different kinds. The plate also has a longitudinal slot 37 open at one end and adapted to receive the rod 7, by which said plate may be fitted on said rod to set the le. The plate is shown on a smaller proportionate scale than Fig. l, owing to the lack of greater space in the drawings.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, and I therefore reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
I claim- In a saw-filing device, the combination with a saw-clamp and a tile-holder having a guiderod; of a slide adjustable longitudinally on the clamp and provided With a bracket having a bearing, a yoke in which the guide-rod of the holder is slidably mounted, said yoke being provided with a pivotopening and an arc-slot, a yoke-carrier having spaced ears forming a guide to receive the yoke and provided With a trunnion journaled in said bearing, said trunnion having at one end acollar engaging one end of the bearing to hold it against longitudinal movement in one direction, and an annular series of seats, a Washer secured to the trunnion and engaging the other end of the bearing to hold the trunnion against longitudinal movement in the opposite direction, a set-screw upon the bearing to engage the seats in the trunnion to secure it in adjusted position against rotation, a pivot-pin passing through the pivot-opening in the yoke and pivotally connecting the same to the ears of the bracket, and an adjustingscrew passing through the arc-slot in the yoke and adapted to draw the ears together to clamp the yoke, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
lAMBRosE J. BECK.
