G. MORRISON. SAW FILING DEVICE. No. 586,508.
21 la 1\ Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE MORRISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAW-FILING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,508, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed October '7, 1896. Serial No. 608,121; (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sa\v-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of saw-sharpening appliances in which means is provided for holding and directing the file in its movement. 7
The objects of the present improvement are to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient appliance whereby the file is held and directed in its movement, so that the even and uniform filing of the series of saw-teeth can be efiected in a rapid and certain manner, and with which any desired undercut may be given to the saw-teeth by a simple and convenient adjustment of the appliance, as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claim. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the general arrangement of the present invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the guiding-head of the present invention, taken at line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the saw-stand, which in the present invention will be provided with a horizontal rearwardlyextending guide ledge or table 2, 3 being the saw-holding vise, secnredzto the saw-stand l in any usual manner, with its saw-holding jaws arranged parallel with the guide ledge or table 2 of the stand, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the present invention the guide-head 4: is adapted to' slide upon and be guided by the horizontal table 2 and be provided with a bearing-roller 5 to avoid unnecessary friction. The guide-head 45 will usually be of a rectangular form, as shown, and of a size adapted to be readily grasped by the hand of the operator.
6 is a receiving-socket for the end of the saw-file 7, of a triangular or other suitable form, so as to receive and hold the file end against a rotative movement. This socketpiece is adapted to be adjusted circularly by means of an arm 8, a segmental slot 9 in the body of the guide-head 4, and a clampingscrew 9, so as to adjust the file to the required position to accomplish any desired degree of undercut, &c., upon the teeth of the saw that is being filed. The arm 8 will act also as a pointer to guide the proper setting of the appliance, and to this end the body or head 4 will be provided with a series of figures or graduations to guide the operator in quickly and conveniently effecting such adjustment.
10 is a set-screw passing in through the side of the socket-piece and adapted to clamp the end of the file .in place.
In use the end of the file will be clamped in the guide-head at and the proper adjustment or setting of the file eifected by means of the arm 8 and clamping-screw 9. The operator then, with one hand grasping the guidehead 4; and the other hand grasping the filehandle, imparts the required reciprocating movement to the file, and With the roller 5 bearing upon the guide-table the file is guided in a very perfect manner to effecta very uniform filing of the different teeth of the saw.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-- The herein-described saw-filing appliance comprising a guide-head 4, the lower end of which is adapted to slide upon a suitable table, and a file-holding socket-piece secured in a circularly-adjustable manner in the head, and provided with an arm 8, and clampingscrew 9, the guide-head being formed with a segmental slot for the clamping-screw, and with an index-scale for the arm 8, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Witness my hand this 1st day of October, 1896.
GEORGE MORRISON.
In presence of ROBERT BURNS, H. W. A. No'r'r.
