SAW-FILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,332, dated October 9, 1894. Application filed February 13,1894. Serial No. 500,099. (No model.)
Be it known that I, JASPER N. HOWARD, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the 3.0-.

This invention relates to certain improvements in saw filing machines, having an adjustable sliding head for holding thefile in any desired position, also in the construction of the saw-clamp.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents frame secured to a table or bench 34 by means i of the clamp 32 and set-screw 33. .The frame 1 is provided with rods, 2, which pass through the holes 13, inthe sliding guide head, which is adapted to slide laterally. The lower portion of the head 6 is movable vertically and rotary. It is movable vertically by means of the standard 17 passing through the hole38 in the cylinder 9, and is held in position by the thumb-screw 3, and the spring 8,and it the cylinder 9,which is held in 45 is adjustable rotary, through the medium of place by the set screw, 10, and the groove 11.
The guide-block 7 is pivoted at 36 to the legs 40, and is heldin the desired position by the set-screw 35. It is also provided with the hole 37, through which thefile guide rail 18 passes'freely, backward and forward. Said file guide rail isprovided at one end with a fixed depending arm 19, while the opposite end has a like depending arm movably secured to the rail by means of the set-screw 23. The file handles 21 pass through the dependingarms 19 as shown at 20 and are adapted to be rotated to set the file 22 at any degree of angle, when they are securely held in place by the set-screw 41.
The saw-clamp is pivoted at either end, at 24 to the frame 1, and is providedwiththe cross rail 39 secured at either end to the clamp jaws ward and forwardinto the n0tches26 of the.
arm 25 of the saw-clamp, thus raising the arm 25 which in turn draws the arms 29, and cross .rail.39 snugly against the saw, which is held on the other side by the cross rail of the frame 1.
The sliding guideheadis provided with two gages 15 and 16 for marking the angle at which the file is set, the gage 15 is composed of a segment of a circle on one side of the lower part of the sliding guide headfi (see Figs. 2,
3, 4, 5, and 6,) and rotates iii-conjunction with the lower guide head 6, and; its pointer 14 projectsout on thesame side of the upper part of the guide-head 5. (See Figs. 2, 3, and 4:)

In use the frame is secured to the bench by the clamp 32 and the set-screw 33, the saw is then placed in the saw clamp, and the file adjusted as follows: The thumb-screw 3is adj usted so as to allow the file to go down the desired distance, thus making the saw tooth of acertain length, then the thumb-screw 10 is loosened and the cylinder is turned to desired angle, so that the file can cut the saw tooth at a certain bevel, which would be indicated by the gage 15, then the set-screw 10 is turned snugly into the groove 11 of the cylinder 9, and for still further adjusting the file and guide bar, the set-screw 35 isloosened andthe guide block 7 is set atthe desired angle, designated by the gage 16, when the setscrew is tightened against the guide block 7.

, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
