PETER RECCONI, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR, VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
Application filed November 12, 1913. Serial No. 800,525.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER REGCONI, a sub ject of the King of Italy, residing in the city and county of SanFrancisco and State of California, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a clamp or device attachable to a vise.
The object of the present invention is to provide a clamp or attachment for vises whereby pieces being worked upon, as, for instance, parts of machinery, etc., andpau ticularly such as crank-shafts of automobiles, may be firmly clamped and leveled and held in a level position with relation to the vise and'convenient thereto so that the workman or machinist can fit and try the fittings or associated parts of the structure which may be mounted in the attachment clamp.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a clamp or support for holding work, and which includes means for leveling the work and for permitting of its free angular adjustment in a horizontal plane, and which device is adjustable so that the work may be held sufficiently above the work-bench or adjacent surfaces as to enable the free application and operation of elements related to the work in the clamp.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device attachable to bench vises for the steady and level holding and supporting of crank-shafts which are being trued or otherwise worked upon and the connesting-rods and other elements related to the crank-shaft fitted and turned freely about the crank-shaft while it is in the support. The purpose of attaching this to the viseis to provide for the convenient arrange ment, location and support of the work or crank-shaft in juxtaposition to the bench vise, so that the parts can be quickly removed and fitted in one or the other, thus resulting in the saving of the use of two vises for conducting the simple operation of fitting connecting-rods to crank-shafts, for instance, and also avoiding the unnecessary steps along the bench from one device to the other.
The invention consists in an attachment having a part applicable and attachable to a vise body, and having a body or guide portion upon which is longitudinally slidable a bed-plate, to whichis pivotally and adjustably related a clamping jaw carrying a removable and adjustable complementary clamp plate, and also includes means for leveling the clamp jaw so that the work in hand may be level.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device as applied to a standard form of vise. Fig. 2
is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line of Fig. 2.
The invention in its present embodiment comprises a rigidly braced head end or body part 2 in the form of an inverted U, the legs of which are of suitable length and provided with flanges or feet 3 enabling its at tachment to a suitable support. In the present adaptation the head or body part 2 is shown as clamped by set-screws lupon the fixed body part 5 of a bench vise 6.
Suitably formed with or attached to the front or body part 2 of the device are rearwardly extending parallel guides or rails 7 which are provided at their rear ends with supporting legs 8 for adjustment upon the supporting surface, as the bench 9. Slidably mounted along the upper surface of the guides or table part 7 is a bedplate 10 of suitable form and may be of suificient width to slightly overhang the sides of the table 7, the bed-plate 10 being clamped to the table 7 by suitable hook bolts or clamps 11 extending downwardly and hooking under the bottom surface of the table 7.
Turnably adjustable in the table 7 is a central spindle or bolt 12, of substantial proportions and suitable length, which may be locked in position by lock nuts 12. The upper head of the bolt is provided with a yoke or pivot bearing 13, in which is mounted a pivot pin 14 supporting a bossor hinge part 15 which is secured to or formed upon the lower surface of a work receiving plate or jaw 16. The jaw 16 may be of rectangular cross section so as to form an upstanding back upon which work, for instance a crank-shaft, indicated in dotted lines, may be firmly drawn and clamped by a movable clamp plate 17. Through the clamp plate 17 projects the outer end of a screw 18, which screw 18 may be jointed at 19 to the work plate or jaw 16 which may be slotted, as at 20, to allow the bolt 18 to be thrown upwardly and outwardly to carry the clamp plate 17 to the rear of the back plate of the jaw '16. Thebottom of the jaw 16 may be provided with an aperture 21 through which the bolt 18 may be projected when it is desired to draw the clamp plate 17 downwardly against work resting upon the work rest or jaw 16.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the present device is particularly useful in holding work in convenient position to the vise 6, so that the workmen can clamp one part of the work in the attachment between the jaws 16 and17 and may use the vise 6 for the support of pieces which are being fitted upon the work held in the attachment.
It is very importantin truing up and fitting mechanical structures, particularly in the case of fitting bushings, connecting-rods and the like to crank shafts, that great accuracy is obtained. This is facilitated when the piece is held in the auxiliary attachment of the vise which can be made perfectly level. For the accomplishment of this I provide diametrically opposite, vertically adjustable screws 22 which may fit in threaded parts 23 of the work plate or jaw 16, the lower ends of the screws 22 resting upon the bed 10 of the device. In this way the work mounted in the jaws l6 and 17 can be leveled up and as the hearings or other parts are fitted upon the same the accuracy of the latter can be nicely determined and corrected.
The screw post or standard 12 turnable in the bed 10 permits the vertical adjustment of the work holding jaws 16-17 to the desired elevation above the bench 9 or the body of the vise 5 when the attachment is supported entirely thereby, so that pieces being fitted to the work held in the attachment can be swung freely around the work, as is necessary in fitting parts to crankshafts. The attachment provides for longitudinal adjustment with relation to the vise 6 by the sliding relation of the bed 10 along the table 7. Again, the horizontal angular relation of the work may be varied by horizontally turning the jaws 16-17 about the pivot post 12.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I 1. In a removable attachment for Vises which latter are secured to horizontal suports a air ofs aced horizontal rails an inverted U-shaped head to the top portions of the legs of which one end of the rails are connected, said head being adapted to removably straddle the fixed part of the vise,
Copies of t is, patent may be obtained for which bears the vise, a bed plate on the rails, and a work holder on the bed plate.
2. In a'vise attachment a horizontal table, a pair of legs at the front end of the table secured thereto and depending therefrom and adapted to straddle and be secured to the fixed part of the vise, legs at the rear end of the table depending therefrom for seating engagement on the supporting memher to which the vise afiixed, and a work holder on the table. J I
3. In a vise attachment, a table, means to connect the table to the vise, a bed plate adjustable on the table, a vertically adjustable and rotatable post on the bed plate, a jaw pivoted to said post so'as to enable its ends to be vertically oscillated, and means between the aw and bed plate to hold the aw rigidly against movement on said pivot of the post. 7 j
4. Ina vise attachment, a table, means to connect the table to the vise, a bed plate adjustable on the table, a vertically adjustable and rotatable post on the bed plate, a jaw pivoted to said post so as to enable its ends to be vertically oscillated, and a pair of vertical screws adjustably connected to the jaw and depending therefrom and located on opposite sides ofthe post and having their lower ends bearing on the table to hold the jaw rigidly against movement on the pivot and to allow same to be adjusted about said pivot.
5. In a vise attachment, a pair of horizontal spaced angle irons, means to con nect said angle irons together and to the vise, a bed plate seating' on the horizontal parts of the angle irons, hook-bolts, the hooks of which engage under the free edges of the vertical parts of the angle irons, the
upper ends of the bolts being projected through the bed plate, nuts on the bolts bearing against the top face of the bed plate, and a work holder on the bed plate.
6. In a vise attachment, atable having a central slotted part, a bed plate on the table slidably connected thereto, a post on the bed plate vertically adjustable with relation thereto andhaving its lower end received in the table slot, a work clamp pivoted to the upper end of the post, and a pair of vertically adjustable elements interposed between the bed plate and table for holding the clamp in rigid position on the post and for enabling the clamp to be secured at varying angles to the bed plate. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing five cents each, by addressing the jfflomm issioner of Patents,
Washington, D. G.
