U N NE D S T JOHN H. BBAlVII-IORST, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CLAMP.
Application filed February 28, 1922.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BnAMHoRsr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a clamp which is particularly adapted for use by carpenters and joiners, and it is the general object of the invention to provide a clamp of this nature which may be adapted for a great variety of uses, and in practically any position.
My invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im proved clamp, attached to a bench.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view thereof, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an attachment which may be used in connection with the clamp.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates one of the jaws which is relatively fixed and extended at its lower end and turned laterally, as shown at 6, to provide an arm for supporting a clamping screw 7, by means of which "it may be secured to the. bench 8. In securing the clamp to the bench, the latter is clamped between the head 9, swiveled on the end of the screw 7, and a bracket 10, which is formed integral with and extends laterally from the jaw 5. The inner end of the bracket 10 is upturned, as shown at 11, and an adjusting screw 12 is rotatably supported in the jaw 5 and the upturned end 11, and is parallel to the intermediate portion of the bracket 10.
A movable jaw 13 is in threaded engagement with the screw 12, and is provided with flanges 14: which guide the jaw upon the bracket 10 whenever the screw 12 is rotated to adjust the jaw.
Serial No. 539,882.
The clamp may also be used without being secured to the bench, and when so used, it will preferably be turned on its side and in order that it may be used in this manner, the jaws 5 and 13 are extended laterally, as shown at 15, so as to grip the board 16, or the like, which rests upon the upper side of the bracket 10.
For clamping large work, an extension 17 is provided for each jaw, and is preferably formed with a slotted recess 18 which fits over and is supported by the upper end of the jaw, the latter being disposed with its inner face vertical, but having its outer side tapered and shaped so as to snugly receive the extension.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a clamp which is of practically universal application, and while I have shown one specific form in which the invention may be embodied, it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the shape and relative size of the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A clamp of the class described comprising a jaw having a bracket formed integral therewith, a screw rotatably mounted in the bracket, a second jaw in threaded connec-v tion with the screw, the intermediate portion of said bracket forming a track on which the second jaw is guided, each of said jaws having fiat working faces and slanting rear faces to provide an upward taper and having a laterally projecting portion extending beyond a marginal edge of the track, and extension cross heads having sockets for removably mounting the same on said jaws and in binding relation thereto.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
JOHN H. BRAlWHORST.
