Description

ISAAc FISHER, on ST. LOUIS, MISsoUnI.
IMPROVEMENT IN VISES. r.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.V 81,'7611, dated September 1, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAc FISHER, of the city and county of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented sundry new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a portion of this specification.
' My said improvements are mainly applicable to all metallic vises, and especially so to the vise patented by me May 5,1868, and may be described as follows: v
My rst improvement in vises consists in combining peculiarly-constructed steel facings b b with the jaws a a of a vise, and copper, lead, or other soft-metal clamp or clamps, made of any suitable material, and so constructed as to be held in position 'by the projecting ends of the facings, the said fac-ings having each a recess of a dovetail shape formed in its rear side, which receives a correspondinglyshaped projection on the face of the respective jaws a of the vise, as shown in Figs. 3, 4,
9, and 10 of the accompanying drawings. This construction of the said facings gives them a strong hold of the cast-iron jaws of thc vise, and also gives suicient thickness to the central portion thereof to prevent their breaking. I give'siich proportions to the jaw-facings b b as will cause their ends to project a short distancebeyond the sides of the visejaws a a, for the purposeot enabling the softmetal or wooden jaw-caps w m, Fig. 11, to be so securely combined with the vise-jaws that they will not be displaced by any shifting of the position of the vise.
'My second improvement-in vises consists in combining the two rectangular corrugated faces c c with the jaws a a thereof by means of the blocks d d, Fig. 12, in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the corrugations in the said rectangular facings c c enabling any article of a round oroval shape to be rmly held by the vise While it is being operated upon i'or any purpose, without marring its shape.
My third improvement in vises consists in pivoting a triangular-shaped block, j, to a removable block, d, located between the jaws of my improved vise, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, the said pivoted block j serving the purpose of a self-adjusting jaw, and enabling the vise to receive and. securely hold articles of a tapering shape, as shown by the articles 1c ,kin Fig. 8.
The ,actuating -lever Z is prevented from freely sliding back and forth in its aperture in the head of the screw j' by means of a disk of india-rubber or other suitable spring let into a lateral aperture in the said screw-head, and pressed against the side of said lever by the set-screw m, as represented in Fig. 5.
By attaching a pivoted blocker follower, i, Figs. 9 and 1l, to the extremity of the guiding jaw-bar e of the vise when the vise is s ecured to a work-bench, and then securing a holding-rest to the said bench immediately opposite the end of said guiding-bar, my said improved vise may be used for clamping purposes.
By unscrewing my improved vise from its base-supporter A, Fig. l, and then combining it with a supporting-stand, g, in the manner shown by Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the said combination will produce a superior jackscrew, either with or without the follower h, which may be combined with the head of the screw f, as also shown in said drawings.
I am aware that it is not new to attach to the jaws of a vise an auxiliary jaw having a double-inclined surface, by virtue of which wedge shaped or tapering pieces may be grasped by-said vise; nor do I claim said device or its combination; but I claim- 1. The combination of the steel facingsb b with the jaws a a of a vise and the soft-metal clamps .fr a', substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the rectangular facings c c with the vise-jaws a a by means of the removable blocks d d, Fig. 2, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein'set forth.
3. The arrangement of the pivot-connection of the 'triangular block j with the removable 'substantially as and i'or the purpose herein Set forth.v
ISAAC FISHER. Witnesses:
