ALEXANDER STOCKMAR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM S. SEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND vlses on cLAMPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,447. dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER C. ,STOCK- MAR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain vnew and useful Improvements in the Construction and Operation of Clamps and Hand-Vises 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved clamp, the same being shown open; Fig. 2, a view of my improved hand-vise, the same being shown closed.
In the drawings like parts of the invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of Iny invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in the construction and operation of clamps and handvises, as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A and A2 show the limbs of my improved clamp or hand-vise, to which are attached, at their upper ends, the jaws B and B2, riveted thereto, so that they may be freely turned upon the pins passing through them.
In the case ofthe bench-clamp it will be observed that these jaws B and B2 are so coustructed that they can be turned over the upper ends ofthe limbs A and A2, to which they are pinned, thus bringing the faces of the jaws B and B2 outward instead of inwardthe position they usually occupy.
At about one-third of the length of the limbs A and A2, and near the lower extremities of the same, is the cross-piece C, having its ends slotted to receive the limbs A and A2, held within the same, and its lower side slotted to receive and form a bearing for the roller d upon one end of the screw D.
E is a nut,to the sides of which are attached the toggles F F, having their opposite ends attached to the lower extremities of the limbs A and A2. D shows a screw passing through the nut E, and provided with the roller d, having its bearing in the lower side of the screw D.
My improved clamp or hand-vise being thus constructed, when desired to use the same, the limbs A and A2 being away from each other, (see Fig. 1,) to bring them together, thus enabling any suitable article to be grasped between them, the screw D is turned inward, and as it rises through the nut E the same is depressed, by which operation the toggles F F, attached to the nut and the limbs A and A2 at their lower extremities, are thrown out in nearly a direct line, thus bringing together the opposite ends of the limbs A and A2, to which are attached the jaws B and B2.
When desired to release the jaws from coni tact with the article grasped, theniotion of the screw is reversed, and the operation just described is reversed.
The jaws B and B2 are made self-adjusting, and in the case of the clamp, Fig. 1, can be turned entirely over the limbs A and A2, so that their faces will face outward, thus allowing articles, when desired, to be held upon the clamp by throwing the limbs A and A2 away from each other.
My improvement will be found of utility to carpenters, cabinet-makers, and artisans generally, its durability and simplicity allowing it to be afforded at a slightlyincreased cost above the clamp usually employed.
I am well aware of the patent granted Charles Buss, in which a wedge is used to contract the jaws of a 'clamp or hand-vise, and I am aware that said jaws cannot be automatically thrown away from each other, as is effected in my present application by the use of the toggles, attached as shown. Itherefore distinctly disclaim the device patented by Charles Buss.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
In combination with the limbs to which are attached the jaws, the use or employment of the nut, screw, and toggles, when the same shall be constructed and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
