Description

UNITED STATES L. S. HOYT AND E. G. HOYT, OF CROTON FALLS, NEW YORK.
IIVIPROVED SCREW-WRENCH AND HAMMER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,107, dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, L. S. HOY'I and E. G. HOY'I, ot' Groton Falls, Westchester county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Screw-Wrench and Hammer Combined; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation ot this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts.
Thisinvention consists in the arran gement of' a stationary and of a hinged adj ustabe springjaw on one end of a shank or handle, to the other end ot' which a hammer is rigidly attached in such a manner thatatool is obtained which serves the double purpose of a hammer and of a screwwrench, which can be made cheap, and which is ot' great convenience for farmers and for the public in general.
A represents a shank or handle, made of malleable iron or other suitable material; From one end of this handle projects the stationary jaw B, while its other end is rigidly connected to or cast solid with the hammer G.
rlhe stationary jaw B connects by a pivot, a, with the adjustable jaw D, and a screwbolt, b, serves to close up the two jaws and to accommodate the same to the screw or nut to be turned.
A spring, c, interposed between the two jaws B and D, has a tendency to open the adjustable jaw as far as the screw-bolt permits, so that by turning said bolt or the nut which may be 'attached to it the jaw Dpadjusts itself in either direction.
By these means a very convenient wrench is obtained, which can be used with advantage on carriages, wagons, or vehicles of any description, or for other work, and at the same the hammer C renders the whole implement very convenient and complete.
By casting the hammer and wrench all in one piece (with the exception of the adjustable jaw) a very cheap and durable tool is obtained, and no time is 10st in limiting up the hammer or the wrench separate, both being combined in one; and, furthermore, in using our wrench the nut o r bolt can be clasped with the end of the jaws, and the hammer can be used as a handle, rendering the whole implement very convenient.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The implement herein described, having at one end of its shank A a hammer, C, and at y its other end a stationary jaw, B, in combina' tion with the adjustable spring-jaw D, as a new article of manufacture.
