IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTING THILLS TO GARRIAGES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. MELLYN, ol' Roxbury,-in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Device for Adjusting Thills in Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
I This invention consists in constructing a peculiar shaped lever-gripe, whereby the rubber or elastic substance, which is placed incontact with the thills of a buggy to prevent rattling, is compressed so that the thills are easily attached. v
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the apparatus, showing a cross-section of the axle and a portion of the thills in red lines, the section beingthrongh the line a: a: of fig. 2.v
Figure 2 is a top view of the lever and parts attached.
Figure 3 is a detailed view of a part which'is occasionally used with the lever.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
As represented in the drawing, the lever-clamp is adjusted to the axle and to the thills of'a buggy, as when in use for the purpose intended.
' A is the lever-handle; B is the clamp, (which is formed of .two partsO and D,) and which is made adjustable. The part D passes through a band, E, and it is fastened to C at this point by the bolt or screw F. a represents holes in D, which allow of this adjustment. The part of the clamp marked 0 is hinged to the lever A at C..
This adjustment allows the clamp to be used for carriages of different kinds. When the clamp is properly arranged for a buggy, it is applied as seen in the drawing. The rubber, which is placed between the thills and the axle, is to be compressed so as to allow the bolt, by which the thillsare attached, to be introduced into the hole at a. The end of the lever A is placed against the nut in the thills, as at 0, while the end of the clamp bears against the axle. In this manner the rubbers can be renewed at any time, and as it is frequently necessary to change thills, the use of this lever-clamp allows it to be done without loss of time and with the greatest ease. The arrangement is also necessary in attaching a pole to a buggy in the place of thills, and in such cases it may be necessary to lengthen the lever A by attaching the piece seen in fig. 3 at the end of it. In this case the end of the lever enters the recess seen at d. It will be understood that to apply the power the lever is raised.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The lever A and the clamp 13, (formed of the parts 0 and D,) arranged and combined substantially as described for the purposes specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of 1867.
MARTIN J. MELLYN.
