NOCH J. MABSTERS, 0F SHAWS FLAT, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent N 106,705, dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom vit 'may concern:
Be it known that LENOCH J .MARSTRS, of Shaws Flut, in the county of Tuolumne and Sta-te of California, have invented a. new and valuable Improvemont in Pruning-Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation o' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification', and to the letters` and figures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawing is'aJ plan view ot' my pruning-shears. l
Figure 2 is a view of the stop-bar and coil-spring, detached.`
M y invention relates to pruning-shears, and consists in the adaptationot' the coiled spring thereto, in combination with a stop, lwhcreby their manufacture is cheapcned, 'and they are rendered easy ot` repair.
'lhe play of the jaws is also regulated, so that they will not expand beyond the grasp.
lhc letter A of the drawing designates the shears, whereof the handles are perforated at a', to admit the ba'r B. l
C represents the coiled spring, encirclingV the bar B between the handles of the shears, and serving to expand them.
The projecting ends of the rod or bar B are pro vided with pins e e, for preventing the expansion of' the handles beyond these points.
The coiled spring is inexpensive, and easily applied in the manner shown. lVithout the rod this form of spring could n ot be used between theilandles, as it would not retainits position. I
An important object is designed to be eeoted by the stops on the end of the rod. The handles ot' the shears are prcvented from tiying 'beyond the grasp, and there is, consequently, no extra eort necessary toregain them in the compressing not.
I donut claim, broadly, the operation of pruningshears by means of a spring, or any stop, to regulate lthe expansion thereof; but
lVhat I cluim as my invention, :und desire to se* cure by Letters Patent, is
In a pair of pruning-shears, the arrangement of the bar 13, capable of movng-emlwise in either direction, the Vcoiled spring c, removable pins or stops e, and recesses a, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have horeimto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesscs.
l ENOGH J. MARSTERS. lVitnesses:
J. M. Lonme, A. BULLERDIECK.
