Description

dilated tang HENRY SHUTTS, OF OREGON, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 91,048, dated .Tune 8, 1869.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
TheA Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern v Be it known that I, HENRY SHUTrs, of Oregon, in the county of Holt, and State of Missouri, have iuvented a new and improved Mechanical Movement; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form-` ing part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanical appliances, designed for exerting great force by the application of power with a lever, adapted for 0p` eratng presses, lifting heavy weights, Sac.
It consists in an arrangement of oscillating eccentn'cfwheel and two sets of cams, the two sets of cams being arranged to act upon the face of the cam-wheel at points opposite to each other, and the cams of each set being arranged to throw in opposite directions, and caused to transmit a reciprocating motion to a sliding bar, all as hereinafter more fully specified.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus, and
Figure 2 represents a transverse sectional elevation of the same.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I'arrange, preferably, within a case, A, an eccentric or cam-wheel, B, having four eccentric or cam-facets, a, b, c, and d, and a corresponding number of notches, e f y h., the facets constituting two sets, at opposite points on the periphery of thesaid cam-wheel; and the facets of each set are opposedtoeach other inthe v direction of their'throw.V
The aforesaidnotches are arranged, one at the Vroot of each eccentricfacet. O and D represent one set of cams, arranged to opcrate in conjunction with the facets a b of the wheel. B, and have points adapted-to take into the notches c f, which form the means of keeping the cams in place, the othes points, ij, of the cams being engaged in notches also, one notch being in the hase of the case A, and the other in a ledge in the side of the sliding bar G.
The other set of cams, E F, is similarly arranged, with reference to the opposite face ofI the cam-wheel, the case A, and the reciprocating bar.
H represents an operating-lever, engaging with the cam-wheel through a slot in the side of the case.
When the lever is moved downward, the cam Fwill beraisedby the rotation. of the wheel, and its upper point, taking into the .Upper notch in the sliding har will raise it, while, at the same time, the cam O, whose point fi rests in the notch in the other end of the sliding bar, will recede, and allow the bar to rise. An npward movement will also be imparted to the wheel by the cam D, whose lower "point, being in the notch in the bottom ofthe case ,A and the cams C and E, will roll on their respective facets a and c, being simply, at this time, maintained in their connection with the notches thereby. v v
If an opposite movement of the operatingelever be made, the cam E will force the wheel downward, and` the cam O will give an accelerated downward move# ment to the slide, while the cams D and F will roll upon their respective facets, heingfonlyretaiued in position, awaiting their time of action, upon the reverse movement of the hand-lever. In this manner, a continuous and powerful reciprocating movement may be imparted to the slide.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire lto secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the cam-wheel B, cams O D andE F, slide G, when all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
I Witnesses:
T. C. DUNGAN, WM. Kouonnn.
