Description

PatentedSep. 19,1871.
Inventbr Witnesses:
FFICE.
.ATENT JAMES F. RIOKEL, OF BYRON, ILLINOIS.
' IMPROVEMENT IN SASH- l-IOLDE'RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,050, dated September 19, 1871.
To all whom vit may concern: u l i Be it known that I, JAMES F. RIGKEL, of Byron, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois,
` have invented a new and useful Improvement'm the independent movement ofthe other; and consists in certain details of construction, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved window-fastener attached to a window 5 Fig. 2, a view of the fastening detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventioml will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a plate provided with projecting arms a a', as shown. b' bl represent bolts attached to the lower side of the plate A upon the arms a a', and secured thereto in any `proper manner. These Vbolts are provided at one extremity with ends b2 b3, which project through suitable slots in the plate, as shown, and at the other extremity their ends are bent to form re cesses b4 b4, as shown. c c represent springs placed upon the bolts b b1, and so arranged as to force the bolts toward the inner edge of the plate. d represents a pivoted bar, the arms of which rest in the recesses b4 of the bolts, as shown. The pivot of the bar d extends through the plate, and has attached to its upper side an operatinglever and handle d', as shown. The plate is attached to the ame of the window in suitable recesses in any proper manner. The long arm a extends far enough to bring its bolt in contact with the face of the upper sash, while the short arm extends to the lower sa-sh. The sashes may be provided with grooved bars, as shown, or the sashes themselves may be grooved. It is desirable, also, that each sash should have a recess arranged to receive the bolt, said recess being located opposite the bolt when the sash is fully closed.
The operation is as follows: The bolts rest, when the sashes are closed, in the recesses provided for them, and thus securely prevent the sashes from being opened from the outside. When it is desired to raise and lower them the lever d is operated, by which means either bolt is drawn in, according to the movement of the lever, and one of the sashes is free to move. A downward movement of the lever frees the upper sash and an upward movement the lower sash.
It will be observed that the operation of one bolt does not aifect the other, each being independent of the other, although operated by the same lever.
The device described is simple in construction, and therefore can be cheaply manufactured. It is also exceedingly effective in its operation.
j Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sash-holder described, consisting of the plate A with projections 'a a', bolts b1 b1 with ends b2 b3 projecting through slots in the plate,
and having springs c c, as shown, pivoted bar el moving in recesses I) b, arm d., in combination with the racks of the sashes, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 1st day of April, 187]..
