Description
UNITED STATES .LITENT QFFIGE.
ELIJAH KNAPI, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,25S, dated April 29, 1873; application tiled December 14, 1872.
tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a windowsash having Iny improvement. Fig. 2 represents a plan with jamb broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken through c b,
Fig. 2.
To avoid the slipping or sliding of the window when it is raised or lowered, and in the position desired without marring the sashes, and exclude the wind and dust are the object and purpose of my invention. My invention consists in the use of a thin piece of `metal attached to the inner face of the sash" at eachV side of the window, the outer end extending sufficiently far to be covered by the windowjamb. The plate is held by two small screws, and a screw is placed underneath it centrally to be-operated upon through an opening, which raises or depresses the plate, causing it to act in the capacity of a spring against the jamb, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the draw- Ing.
A represents a plate of steel or other metal, which is rigidly secured to one side of the window-sash frame D by one or more screws, C. The plate extends outwardly between the sash and jamb or casin g of the window. A screw,
B, with rounded head is made to enter the sash underneath the plate about midway, which acts as a fulcrum and imparts more or less tension and spring to the plate by loosening or turning up the screw, which is accomplished through a hole or opening made in the plate of less size than that of the screw-head.
By this device it will be clearly understood that a lever of the first kind is had where the screw B is the fulcrum, the screws C C are the resistance, and the jamb or casing the power, and the plate acting as a spring to keep the upper and lower sash in close contact with each other and aga-inst the outer casing, thus retaining the sash in positionV as well as preventing rattling and the wind and dust from entering the apartment, which is of so common anoccurrence where the sash is suspended by cords and weights or other devices.
I am aware of the patent of W. E. Sweet, October 17,1871, and do not claim the construction therein shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
The thin plate A attached to the inner face ofthe sash, secured by screws or their equivalents at one end, and adjustable against the jamb by means of a screw placed beneath its central portion an d operated through an opening of less size than the head of said screw, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
