IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,232, dated July 21, 1874; application filed January 9, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NORMAN It. BATES, of Titusville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and effective fastener or stop for retaining window-sashes at any position to which they may be adjusted. To this end my invention consists of a metallic spring of a curved or arched form, rigidly connected a-t one end to the window-sash, and its other or free end engaging with a serrated or stepsha-ped wedge, which is adjustable for causing the curved portion of said spring to press -with greater or less force against the jamb of the window-frame.

screws a a or otherwise, one end of a metallic spring, D The said spring is curved or arched, as shown, so that its center portion will bear aga-inst the ja-inb of the frame A with a yielding pressure, and its upper or free end bears againsta serrated wedge-shaped block, E. This wedge, in the present instance, is arranged in avertical guide-groove, b, in the sash Bf, and is formed or provided with a series of steps, shoulders, or stops, c, into any one of which the free end of the spring D may be adjusted, by which means,

by adjusting said wedge-shaped block vertically in its guide-groove, the spring D is caused to bear with greater or less force against the jamb of the window-frame with a yielding pressure for securing the sash at any height to which it is adjusted. Instead of providing the wedge-shaped block with shoulders or steps, it may be merely roughened and the free end of the spring bear upon the roughened surface; but I prefer the shoulders as being more eifectual and preventing the accidental displacement of the wedge. A lserrated or notched wedge-shaped block, combined with the friction-spring D, as above described, enables the same to be thrown outward in respect to the edge of the sash, to cause it to bear with more or less force against the window casing orjamb.

I have described the spring and wedge as being' applied to the sash; but the same may be located in a recess formed in the casing, so as to bear against the edge of the sash.

In Fig. 3 I have shown the wedge and spring arranged in a metallic casing, F, in which they are secured and applied to a window, when desired.

I claim as my inventionv In combination with the window-sash, the curved or arched spring D and serrated wedgeshaped block C, adjustable substantially as described, for the purpose herein set forth.
