Letters .Patent'Nm 105,976, dated August 2, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N sAsH-HLDERS.
The `Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Taal! whom it 'may concern.- l
Be it known that I, W. E. PHELPs, of Elmwood,
inthe county of Peoria andv State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Rudow-sash Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willyenable `others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference` being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. l
The figure is a 4front view of -a window, illustrating my improved fastenenparts being broken away to show the construction. My invention has for its object to furnish an im-Y provedwindow-sash fastener, cheap, simple in construction, which can be easily attached to any window,
which will hold the-window-sashes securely at ay :height to which they maybe raised, and Vwhich will entirely prevent the sashes from rattling; and
. It consists ininserting U-shaped blocks of India rubber-n recesses formed' in the ont-er edges of the side hars `ot' the sashes, to press against the sides of the casing, and,A by their elasticity, hold the said sashes in place, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the casing, and B is `the sash of `the window, about the construct-ion of which parts there is nothing new. i
D are U-shaped blocks of rubber, the ends or arms of which are placed in recesses in the outer edges of the side bars ofthe sash B, in such a way. as to allow .the outer edges of the blocks to press against thecas-v ing A in the bottom of the groove in which the saidv sash moves np and down, and, by their elasticity, hold the sash securely, in whatever position it may he placed. 5
The blocks 1) are secured in place by hrads or nails passing through the said sash, and through the said blocks, as shown in thedrawing.
By the elasticity of the rubber blocks, the windowsashes will be held securely in any position to which they may he raised, while, atLt-he same time, fthey allow the sashes to beraised and lowered freely. fastener also preventsjthe sashes from rattling wit-h the wind, in any position, whether raised or lowered.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The window-sash fastener, formed by securing the. U-shapedIndia-rubber block D in recesses formed in the outer edges of the side bars of the sashes, as here- 1 `in described and shown.
