Description

S. M. PRATT.
Sash-Holder.
No. 166,808, Patented'Aug. 17, 1875.
- Attorney5 THDGRANiER. WASHINGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
SERAIAH M. PRATT, OF CHEROKEE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO H. C. KELLOGG, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,808, dated August 17, 1875; application filed m 23,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERAIAH M. PRATT, of Cherokee, Cherokee county, Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a window having my improved sash-holder. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the sash on line 00 0c of Fig. 1.
The same letter indicates the same part in both figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the novel arrangement and peculiar devices by which a rubber-lined strip, inserted in a mortise in the edge of a window-sash, is caused to bear with an adjustable pressure against the inner sides of the window-frame, so as to act as a weather-strip to exclude dust and water and prevent noise, as well as to support the sash in any desired position in the frame, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawings, F marks the window-frame, and S the sash, which runs up and down in the frame in the ordinary manner. In the edge of the sash S is cut a long rectangular groove or mortise, d, which receives a wooden strip, 8, covered on its outer edge with a coating of rubber, r. Projectinginward from this strip are two threaded bolts, to, which pass inward through the sash, as shown. Spiral springs 0, held in recesses in the sash, surround the bolts (0 and tend, by their reaction, to press the strips 8 against the inner sides of the Window-frame. Screw-caps b are screwed onto the inner ends of the bolts a, and tend to draw back the strips 8 against the reaction of the springs 0. By turning these caps b in one direction the strips 8 can be retracted so as to entirely relieve the sash from friction against the window-frame, while, by turning them in the opposite direction, the springs c are left free to press the strips against the windowframe with the requisite degree of force to hold the sash at any desired position in the frame. The sash is held in the frame by the stop-beads A A in the ordinary manner.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the window-sash, of the rubber-lined strip 8, screw-bolts a, screwcaps b, and spiral springs c, in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Cherokee, Iowa, this 25th day of June, A. D. 1875.
SERAIAH M. PRATT.
